Look at this: Very smart idea! http://www.pinterest.com/pin/107171666106580796/

I use garden ties. They are the long version of twist tie. I have several shades of thread that are very close so bobbin holders don't work for me.

Thankyou all for some very good ideas. I may try rubber bands or garden ties as being really inexpensive methods. Paper Princess - I do like the plastic bag system but it hasn't worked well for me because I haven't located any small enough bags - I don't think we can easily buy the same range of sizes in the UK as you can. I may have another surf on Amazon before I give up this method.

I like Handi-Bobs. They're not cheap, but Christmas is coming, lol. Quilt Direct in the UK has them, but you might find it cheaper to import from US (as is often the case) as they're not heavy. Collins and Dritz both make them. :)

I've decided to stay with the plastic bags for now - I've sourced some small ones that I think will file nicely, rather than the mix of shapes and sizes that I have at the moment. If that doesn't work I think it'll be rubber bands or garden ties. Thanks for all the great ideas.

This is a great idea and very inexpensive! I have a sewing machine with huge bobbins and lots of things won’t work for me because of the huge bobbin :(

I keep my spools on a pegboard on the wall. When I'm done with quilting and have leftover thread on the bobbin I either use it to hand stitch the binding to the backside or I put it under the spool on the peg. I also keep bobbins filled with colors I don't use very often to baste down the sides and top so using them up slowly but using them up just the same.

I have my thread on one wall using six of these:

I love these thread racks because they have extra long spool pins. I put my bobbins on with the matching thread. And they can be found for much less than the listings shown, you just have to search a little.
