I keep a small spray bottle on the corner of the board, that's how I discipline the cats from going on the table etc. It works, if they hop on the chair near the board I just move the bottle so they can see it.
Give them a squirt of water!
I knew our cat, Jack, was weird. He wants to drink out of the pool instead of using his waterbowl. We have to keep the water level up so he doesn't fall in. I knew it...I knew it.
I battle with my cat all the time. I can spray her, but when I'm not looking...up she goes, knocking the iron over all the time. I make sure that I unplug the iron and move it off the board when I'm not using it. If she tumples over the board onto the floor...I don't care as long as the iron isn't on it. (Did ya'll ever think that if this contraption were invented today that it would NEVER get approval?...its dangerous!!)
I don't leave my iron on the ironing board. I keep it on a small table next to the board and she has never been interested. The table is sturdy so she couldn't topple it and if she got too close to the iron - well, let's just say she wouldn't do it again.
Cats do not like the smell of vinegar---I spray it where ever I don't want him to go and it works very well---don't think spraying the ironing board with vinegar would hurt it at all---the smell doesn't last but I don't think Toby knows that---worth a try
I'm sorry about the burn. One of my Corgis will try to climb up on the ironing board - it is next to the bed, so easy access for her. So far she has not done it near a hot iron.

I close the door when I don't want their help. Otherwise, it's a matter of using the water pistol
I keep my cat in my sewing room but I made her three places for her to lay and watch and I talk to her and get her opinion. I took fleece and folded it on a shelf above my cutting table she loves high places. On the left side I put a tall box with fleece, her scratching place and toys water and food. Then on the shelf I hung a Kincade tapestry and made her a hiddy hole behind it with a soft warm bed for her "I want to be alone time".
Is she spoiled yes but so am I she makes sure of it. She hasn't bothered my ironing board which I leave up all the time. But don't get me started on Nikki and the lap top computer. She thinks it is hers. |

Squirt her with water when she jumps on it.

After reading all the tips I tried the water bottle on her and she did not like it but it took quite a few shots of water before she stopped jumping up on the ironing board. She is kind of stuburn cat at times. She resorted to bitting me a few time for shooting her with water so I sprayed her for that to!

Hi, in response to your question about keeping the cat off of things! We have one cat we allow in the house and when he would get upon furniture we too would use a spray bottle filled with water to spray at him and tell him no every time we caught him upon any furniture. It has worked for us, it won't harm your cat just hopefully discourage him as it has our cat Trapper. My husband and I have been married 43 years and this cat is the first one that has been allowed in the house. My dear husband does not allow cats in the house as a rule, but because water has kept Trapper off of the furniture, counter, etc. he is in and out as he pleases. He has grown on my husband too as he never much liked cats before, could be because we have an empty nest now and Trapper is good company too.GoodLuck and I too am sorry about your burn, take care.

Your cat looks like my Smokey, we used a squirt bottle and it worked when he wanted to leave anyway. Usually he just squinted and took the blast of water. His way or the hi-way.
If you have a spray or mister, spray the cat. after awhile, all you have to do it go "ack", and act like your going to get the sprayer and the cat will take off, not liking the spray.
I don't try If I'm using it I use a water bottle other wise I use a lint roller and always have a spare iron just in case it gets knocked to the floor and breaks.
When shooing my cats from the sewing room I just say "OUT" and they know that if they don't go I will spray them. After OUT I say MOVE IT! and they are usually out before I can get the spray bottle.
mine don't get on the ironing board - just my squares as I'm trying to position them! good luck & take care of that burn

I read somewhere that Cat's don't like aluminum foil. try covering your ironing board with aluminum foil. Once it jumps up there a couple of time and lands on aluminum foil, it may decide to stop trying.
Vineger is good for burns. Dip a wash cloth in Vinegar, and apply ice using the vinegar wash cloth between your skin and the ice pack. It takes a long time to stop the burning, but it works. I severly burned my finger on the waffle iron one morning just before a long car trip. I loaded the ice chest with ice and a bottle of vinegar. I grabbed a tiny 2 oz cup from my kids kitchen set. I put one ice cube in the cup with an ounce of vinegar. I soaked my finger in the cup until the ice melted. Then I dumped it out and refilled it with new vinegar and another ice cube and soaked it again until the ice melted. I kept it up for 4 hours, until we arrived at our vacation destination. The pain was completely gone. My finger was pruney, but the burning pain never returned. It works every time. For sunburns, you can soak in the bathtub with a gallon of vingar in the bath water. Soak as long as you can... the vinegar actually reverses the damage so that it doesn't continue to burn. |
can't keep them off. cover the board with towel when not using and never leave hot iron on board when not around. figure they don't know any better and really don't believe you can "train" a cat - mine pretty much have the attitude that they own the house, me and everything in it! yes, they are the masters of the house. at least the dogs listen!
Great idea feline. The first cat I had as an indoor cat swallowed a needle and thread once. When we came home from church the thread was hanging out of his mouth. We were fortunate to be able to rush him to the vet who got it out without having to do surgery. Very careful with things like that now.

She is 16 years old and still full of life.

I butn myself on the oven pretty often. I just grab an icecube and press on the burn for a couple of minutes. It never blisters and never scars.

I have to chuckle at some of these suggestions. I suppose they would work on a normal cat but I have Lucy Fur! Lucy eats aluminum foil. Really. Water bottle, no way! She likes to shower with me. She tries to swim in the dogs water bowl. She likes the spray bottle game and tries to catch the pretty stream of water! A pan of marbles? She can pick up M&M's with her paw. She stretches her "fingers" out and picks all sorts of things up. She throws the rocks from my plants at the dogs sometimes, side arm. Marbles would make better projectiles!
At Christmas we put small jingle bells on the tree. She picked each of them off and would throw them down the stairs in the middle of the night to wake us up. I keep all of my pins in magnetic trays because she'll use he teeth to pick them up. She can pull straight pins out of several layers of fabric. Then sit there with it dangling from her lip until I take it away from her. Keeping her off the ironing board is a lost cause. She can have the ironing board to nap on any time she wants. I've learned it's best to let sleeping cats lie! |
I have a very sturdy ironing board.
When I'm not using the iron, I unplug it and set it on the floor. Easier than arguing with the cat. A cover or towel over the board is a good idea. |
i use a spray bottle with water in it. with 7 cats it works very well
Hope your burn is getting better. My two cats are thwarted needleworkers. They sit on the machine, the ironing board, the mending (large pile), work in progress, ironing, lap, shoulder and take the pins out of pin cushions and tools and pencils etc out of containers. They rigorously quality control completed items and check out beds and chairs for comfort levels on a daily basis. Indeed, wherever there is a space, it will be filled by one or both of them. I have learned to live with it and to date have not burned or steamed a cat or myself. I have however, burned and steamed myself when ironing. Should I give up ironing?

I don't have cats now but when I did a squirt bottle was the best thing to use to train them .

The law of unintented consequences handed me my answer. I set up a new ironing board in my sewing room. It was three inches from the wall and it is lightweight. I was in bed about a week ago and I heard a loud bang. Pumpkin had jumped up on the board, it slammed into the wall, and scared her so bad she won't get near the board. I have also tried a spray bottle but it didn't work very well. I'm sorry you got burned. I hope it is healing well.
For Quilts with Convicts: I had to look to make sure my cat was still in the house. Your cat looks exactly like my Pumpkin who's 17. Loved the pictures.
My cats don't get on the ironing board, but they do get on my fabric while I'm trying to cut. I gave them a nice soft bed, which they rejected until I sprinkled it with dried catnip. Now they sleep there when they're in the room with me.
Sorry to hear about you nasty burn, hope it heals quickly. As for your cat, when you bring them in to your home, they take that litterly, it is their home. Sometimes like children, if they get by with it one time, they think it is OK. I am lucky, my cat has never tried the ironing board, nor the cutting/sewing table, she stays on the floor right by my chair. Hope you are successful in breaking her.
My cat does not go up on my ironing board, maybe because it is set up in small hall way off of my sewing room which leads to the 3rd floor.
I haven't had a cat in decades, but enjoyed reading all the helpful tips. I do have a year old shih tzu who has cat-like behaviors. This was a first for us, but the breeder told me that it was not unusual. We use the spray bottle technique occasionally. We've put a little white vinegar in the water and he hates the vinegar odor left on his fur.Stream or spray, hitching the bottle to a pocket, or the warning OhOh has corraled his wanderlust for certain areas. I know Chief would have been up on the ironing board if a chair had been left nearby! DH says Chief is nosey, I say he is inquisitive and we both say we love him :-)
I have never had to fight mine over the ironing board, but he did get on the table once, i swatted him with a piece of newspaper as i would one of the dogs and he never tries it anymore

I've got dogs that don't like electrical cords and don't like all the stuff I have around when I quilt. So they never create a problem-----------except when I cut off their access to the couch. |
Sorry about your burn. Hope it is
healing by now. I don't have any animals inside so can't help with that. Our cat doesn't like it inside. Only when the weather is too cold. Then he tolerates the utility room. LOL |
