Knot in Middle of Spool
Today is the third time that my thread has snapped as I was sewing, and every time it's been the same brand. There was a knot tied at just about the middle of the spool. Fortunately they were gifts, however this is not a good ad for their product. It does not make me want to go out and buy some.

I've had that happen, I assumed it either broke or the one it was winding from ran out, it's very annoying, I almost broke a needle. I don't remember what brand mine was.
|
That's frustrating! Gift or not, I'd still contact the manufacturer. Maybe they will send you a replacement spool.
|
What brand and type was it?
|
I think if that happened to me, I would stop using that brand of thread. If there is a lot of this thread involved, take it back to the store & see if they will exchange it for you!! That is, if it is at all possible.
:D :D :D :D |
I have been sewing for 40 years and I have never heard of or experienced such a thing. When I buy a spool of thread I have always assumed that the thread on that spool was one continuous piece. What brand was it?
|
I had a spool of Maxi-Lock serger thread that was actually cut in the middle of the cone. It had to have been cut on winding the thread as it was below the top layers. I peeled off thread until I found the continuous start and finished the spool.
Something in the mfg. process must have cut it. The spool shouldn't have wound so full otherwise. |
I have gotten some from CT that had knots in 2 different places.
|
I have had this happen as well but mine wasn't spliced it actually just had a knot in the spool, don't know how it happens but it sure does.

The brand name is Wonderfil. I do not know anything about them really. When I finish what I have, I will be returning to Coats and Clark.
|
I have had the knots happen with several different brands. Mostly it was joining two different segments of thread to make a continuous thread. A couple of times, the knot slipped all the way through the machine guides, tension and stopped at the needle. It was a surprise for sure.
To save money, I buy only 1100 meter to 5000 meter cones and accept that it can happen with that large cone of thread. To me it is just inconvenient. Luckily, my piecing is done in bits at a time and mostly fairly slowly so it hasn't caused any major problems for me. |
you should let the company know I am sure they would want to correct the problem

well I did contact the company and they were glad that I brought it to their attention they sent me a replacement the replacement one was okay |
The first time that it had happened, I contacted them and they did very nicely send another spool of the same color. When that one got to halfway, it had a knot tied in it also. I am not entirely sure to want to continue to receive defective spools from them.

I use low priced thread, large 3000 or 5000 yard cones, all cotton, made for machine quilting. I get it online at CT or ThreadArt. There is always a knot somewhere in the cone. I just re-thread, thinking to myself that I saved about $15 for my trouble. It's good thread at a good price.

i have used wonderfil before and never had an issue. I would contact the company I'm sure they will send you another spool
|
I have had this happen to me with three spools of Coats and Clark thread.
|
Out of thousands of cones and spools there a few that are bound to have a flaw in any brand. Stuff like this doesn't bother me. It's just part of things that happen. I may have paid good money for the thread but I find great almost steal bargains that save me good money so it evens out. I always think when a frustrating bump comes along then I'll have a good bump coming too. It never has failed to be true for me. :)
