Kona fabric
The kona fabric that they sell in joann fabric stores varies from store to store is it the same weight as buying kona fabric online. Thanks for any info.
|
Joann's sells some they call Kona, but if the bolt isn't specifically marked Kaufman, it probably isn't by Kaufman. The Kona I've always found online is by Kaufman, and it is nicer than what Joann's sells. IMHO. :)

it would depend on where -on line- it is not the same as you will find in good quality quilt shops. but if you find a shop that offers 'lesser priced' cotton fabrics you may find it there. it varies on line just like in stores- but if you know the fabrics an on line store carries you will be able to choose ones that are nice. I love kona solids- but I don't buy them from Joann's (or pretty much any other fabric) I occasionally shop there for tools, notions, books- when I need something right away & have a coupon. when visiting on-line shops read the customer comments and ask around to find out how their fabrics are- or contact them and ask for swatches- some places (like fabric.com) offer swatches so you can check out the fabrics before committing to any real amount.

Robert Kaufman has actually posted on this board and said they only make one quality of fabric.

i also belong to another forum and this topic was brought up there a couple of weeks ago. Robert Kaufman joined the forum and posted, sharing the same information. |
Kona is a registered trademark to Kaufman. Only Kaufman can use the name... and as stated earlier they only make one quality of Kona.

Its good stuff. And most prints are beautiful!

Hobby Lobby carries Kaufman Kona solids, for a very reasonable price.

I have personally witnessed JoAnne employees take a black non Kona broadcloth bolt end of approximately 5 yards of fabric and put it on the black Kaufman Kona bolt. That was the last time I bought quilting fabric from JoAnnes. They were not doing it to be deceitful or rip off the customers they just don't know the difference. The problem is most of JoAnne employees are not sewers, let alone quilters. To them one black solid is no different from another. This would explain why the OP and many others who have posted the same here felt the fabric is different weight/quality from Kaufman Kona.
Anytime I have order Kaufman Kona solids on line from Fabric Depot or Hancocks of Paducah, I have always gotten the Kaufman Kona that I expect. Same goes for Moda Bella solids from Thousands of Bolts. I have not tried Hobby Lobby because it is less expensive for me to order from Hancocks of Paducah on line even with shipping. And it is much more convenient for me to shop the net. |

I just bought some from Hobby Lobby and it is beautiful.

I wish kona cotton had something on the selvage to identify it. Like other lines of fabric do.

Like a pp mentioned though, you don't know for sure if what is on the bolt is the same as the bolt label. I have a color card but I don't carry it around. It's huge. And even if a color matches, that doesn't mean it's the same brand.
|
Isn't this pretty! Wow - so many colors to choose from! http://www.fabricshack.com/cgi-bin/S...man_konacotton
I love Kona for a background fabric. |
I went to buy a 'Kona' solid at JoAnns on Monday. I needed 3 yards of a difficult to match color. When I got it to the cutting table, there was only about 1.5 yds. wrapped around a much lighter color.....makes you wonder what the fabric really was. Needless to say, I didn't buy any and left pretty disappointed!
|
I've bought most of my Kona solids from HL and never been disappointed ... however, I've seen Kona bolts at Joann's that were definitely NOT Kona ... they had put broadcloth or basic solids back on the Kona bolt. Kona has a heavier hand, you can tell.
Our Joann's also has young girls and few sewers working there (!??) so I just don't trust them to know the difference ... |

There is a pronounced difference in the Kona solids as compared to others. Absolutely worth the price difference, but it does get tricky when sales people don't appreciate the difference and try to group colors together. Have to really be careful and JoAnn's is especially bad about this.
|
Im just to trusting Im glad you ladies have opened my eyes and I will have much more to think about when I am fabric shopping in any store for that matter cause I guess you really never know.Thank you for making me a smarter consumer and quilter.

If I need a solid it's Moda Bella for me. Very reasonable at hancock's of p, thousandsofbolts, and even lqs have it at a good price. I just will not take another chance on Kona. I saw just the color at a well known LQS that also has a terrific online business. They had a ton of colors and I was over the moon to find this color. And I didn't buy it - it was so thin and cheap looking. I went home and ordered some Bella. And other manufactures are putting out some really nice solids now.
|
I find the Kaufman fabrics all to be of high quality & I love the color line in their solids!! I find my stash to have lots of the different lines from them for this very reason.
|
I too have seen Joann's employees wrap loose fabric on a bolt board that was not for that fabric..........I agree they just do not understand the problem they are creating........
|
I'm so happy that there is a Hobby Lobby just about 2 miles from my house; only buy Kona at HB now.
I've bought what I thought was Kona at JoAnn's and been completely dissatisfied with the fabric I'd bought. From what others said makes sense, about the people who work at JoAnns. Sharon |
