There is only madness in my methods....I won't even begin to try and explain....

I don't label. I have 7 of the pattern cabinets-all full of fabric-each drawer is for a specific background color-all blues, yellows, etc. The rest of my fabric is in the large(68 qt or larger) totes, more or less organized as all fleece, etc.

I guess my system is a little different from everyone else's. If I have less than a fat quarter, it gets thrown into my scrap bag(s). Fat quarter to 2 yard pieces are folded so that they are approximately 5X9 and stacked on shelves by color/theme/project, etc. I can usually tell at a glance how much is there by the thickness of the fabric. If I have more than 3 yards then I have it on a bolt, with the amount listed on the end of the bolt. Lots of quilt shops and fabric stores will be happy to give away their empty bolts!

PS---I am a non pre-washer.

I dont label fabric but do my drawers of stuff.

Oh Rose Marie, I am so jealous of your organized sewing space.
I always dream of having things that way,but it never seems to end up like yours.
I am SURE that there are "messy creatures" that live in my sewing room, along with the "hide it" creatures. They live there full time, I am sure.
Sometimes they even come out into my other rooms too. lol :twisted:

My messy creatures are my cats. My baby likes to pull out my flannel and haul it all over the house.

No need to apologize, we all handle it differently. I tried to keep track of what size everything was, but only for a week or so.

Yes, quilters need to know how much of what they have when they are deciding to start a project. Most quilters I have made the acquaintance of, jump/dive into their stash and start pulling fabrics together that they like . . .

then they see if they have enough.

Backward, I know, but it so much fun!!

Oh yes, I folded all pieces up to a certain size into one shape, then folded pieces over that size to a different shape and stacked them on the shelves of the armoire. That helped a lot.

You can decide what size groupings to make.

I also used my 8x24 ruller to roll/fold the larger fabric.

I made a smaller cardboard folding card for smaller fabric.

Lois Hallock discusses fabric storage in her book "Creating your Perfect Quilting Space: Sewing-room makeovers for any space and any budget". It is a bit over the top, but gets you to thinking about folding to fit your space as well as the size of the pieces. The book is published by That Patchwork Place. Check out your local library and see if they have a copy.
