Labyrinth pattern -Need help
 

Is there anyway to save the top/pieces you already have ? maybe sort the pieces and put them in baggies to help keep them organized ?

Okay I see 2 sets of problems! 1 Did you cut everything exactly! Measure every piece and make sure you did. If not cut everything down to the smallest strip of that set. 2 Are you sewing 1/4 inch seams. Take 3 strips 2-1/2 inches by 6-1/2 inches sew all 3 strips together on the long edges making a rail fence block. Press to one side. Now measure the middle strip. It should measure exactly 2 inches. 3 Carefully take apart the quilt pieces spray with water and dry press them. I never use steam as it loves to distort the strips and blocks. Also look into the Accuquilt go to cut strips the exact size you need. I would not give up. There are many quilters on the board here to help you. I am ready and willing. Luann in CT

What exactly is/are the problem(s) making it a mess? Is it the instructions? The cutting? The sewing together?

I know you are frustrated! Been there, done that - quite a few times in fact. Have not tried using a kit or a pattern, just wing it most times getting inspiration from pictures I see.

Trade with someone......your applique for their cutting or piecing this quilt. I know I'd jump on that!

Do you have a link to the quilt kit he purchased? I'm not sure where exactly you ran into difficulty (although I must admit to some apprehension about *any* quilt pattern that goes by the name of "labyrinth"! ;) )

It'a a Debbie Maddy pattern and she is so nice. Email her or call her and she will help you with the pattern.
You may want to find a quilt shop or guild close by and get hands on help.

I second BellaBoo's suggestion on finding a guild or quilt shop. My local shop charges $30/hour for private lessons. With the amount your son paid for the kit you think you've messed up, I would spend $30 and have them do an assessment to see if it's salvageable. You may be able to purchase additional fabric(s) to recut the pieces that are incorrect. An experienced quilter may see what you're doing wrong and save the whole thing. I guess what I'm saying is don't give up on the current project until you get an expert opinion!

can you try making it with other fabrics first? it's mainly hst's and squares and should go easily. you are just nervous.
but if you must cut, you must do as the instructions say in order to be certain to have enough material supplied. kits are never generous in fabrics.

I just made a labyrinth quilt from debby maddy's pattern. It is basically half square triangles and squares....5 inch finished if i remember correctly. I had fabric left over so i made a small wall hanging using 2" finished half square triangles and squares. They both turned out beautifully. I thought it was a very easy quilt to make. One of my fabrics was striped, but the way it went together they didn't have to be matched.

barbewest, first stop crying....that really isn't helping. Second are you able to find fabric similar to the kit? If so you could just obtain some "new" fabric and try recutting. I too find that I have to re-cut items, so don't despair, I feel your pain. I blame mine on being left-handed but it's just an excuse. Remember this is your first attempt at doing something new and unfamiliar, you are learning, it's okay to take your time and relax; if you are too frustrated put it down for a while and work on something else until you are ready. Your son has lived his whole life without this quilt another few days will not be so bad. And I am sure he will definately understand. If not, just send him to the lovely ladies on the QB and we will set him straight! Chin up, you can do this!

If this is the one you don't need to buy the whole kit! Buy some cheap fabric, or even use paper to try piecing just one block.

Hang in there!! Take a deep breath and now that you have had a good cry, let these ladies help you out. I feel sure that you can salvage this quilt. After all, you cut very carefully, so the rest will come. I feel your frustration as I have been there too. I will do a happy dance for you when you are finished and PLEASE send pictures when you finish.

Personally, first, I would try to salvage what you have with the help of posters here. Can you post a picture of the quilt so we can see if it's reasonable for a beginning piecer? With only a year's experience, I may one to ask about that.

Second, is this the Labyrinth you are referring to? http://www.amazon.com/Labyrinth-Quil.../dp/B007R613OC It doesn't appear to be to difficult after you master half square triangles, which are not hard. I know kits are available as well as the pattern.

I was going to purchase this pattern from Keepsake Quilting but have second thoughts. Guess I'll wait for Eleanor Burns to put it on her media site

I have made Calico Carriages Labryinth several times, I like cutting my squares 6 inch so i have that little more to work with after sewing cutting and pressing I never get things right no matter how hard i try so I stick to picking up my own fabric for the patterns. Keep working with it I would probably go to your lqs and see if they can help you with the issues.

I.m a newbie to this board but you quilters have helped me so much, as a matter of fact , you don't know it but you all have taugh me at least 90% of my quilting knowledge for which I want to thank you. I know so little about so much. I certainly know I want this board for my friend, and you can help this lady.

If this is your first piecing project, I think I would just cut some squares and practice piecing. Maybe make some 9 patches and put them together, just to get the feel of the piecing. If you think you cut the fabric wrong, it's okay. We've all travelled that road and it's not the end of the world! Just get some similar fabric and try, try again. I really would try making a smaller and less complicated project first. Maybe some placemats or a table runner to begin with. You'll be off and running after that!

I took this class with Debby and I can tell that she does emphasize that you MUST be accurate in your 1/4" seams. Other than that, it is fairly simple to do..even if I HATE doing my quilts in rows...

did you have trouble with the pieces to cute the pattern was not precise enough for me to understand what to cute for this pattern and I got mine from Debbie Maddly maybe all the pages were not there I am doing the queen size and on one page it says revised queen and on the page for layout for the queen there is no 3 1/2 x 20 1/2 but on the paper it says cute 3 1/2 x 20 1/2 I emailed her and have not got a answer yet does your pattern have that on it for the queen I need help thanks

The quilt top is finished and I believe it is being hand quilted. Luann

I'm confused. Crafterrn1, did you piece it for her? or is this your quilt? Either way, I like it. More info would have been nice.
what exactly went wrong with the piecing? Did she send it to you?
