I don't know the "official" dimensions, but I usually make mine 4x5 12" finished blocks. With borders and/or sashing they turn out just about right. Might depend on how big or tall the recipient is, too.

I did a 50x50 and it was perfect !!

I'm new to this so I used an old blanket and laid it across myself, pinned it and measured when it looked/felt right.
Happy quilting.

A lap quilt can be any size you want it to be. If the person who it is for is short, then make it to fit that person and if the person is very tall, then I'd make it much longer. I like my lap quilts to tuck under my chin and my toes!

I make mine WOF and then the length as long as I want it. That way I have no piecing on the backing.

Anymore a lap quilt seams to mean any size from the traditional cover your lap, up to 60" X 72" or longer. :D:D:D

ok then! thanks that does give me an idea, I was thinking of people in wheel chairs, but this is good also. again thanks!

Just be sure they aren't so long they get caught in the wheels.

I do what I call "personal quilts". Just big enough for one person to cover up with. I've found 60" x 80" is just right for any one person to roll up in!

our group donates lap quilts to the local nursing home. They asked for them to be no bigger than 36X36 for wheelchair patients.

I have heard that some places ask you to round the bottom corners, does your local nursing home ask this? Just curious - I was thinking of making some to use up my stash. I left a message for the gal at the nursing home, but she didn't call back yet.

thanks for putting this post up. i had finished some flannel rag quilts and i still have some 10 inch squares. i was thinking of combining them to make some lap quilts for nursing homes. i did one quilt for a local alzheimer center. it ended up being around 45 x 63 but i think some made smaller would better for those in wheelchairs.

36x36? Thanks Pat

I make up the blocks I like, lay it out & if the blocks don't look to make it wide enough, use sashing between them along with my border. It's mostly personal preferrence I think.

There has been nothing said about rounding the corners. One person suggested putting ties on the top corners so they could be tied about the patient, but we haven't heard if the nursing home would like that
