lap quilts w/pockets?
 

I was chatting with someone this last wkend about quilting-in particular small quilts for those in wheelchairs. He told me that his SIL sews them for the Veterans hospital and she puts pockets on the quilts for their small notions they carry around. I've been making lap quilts for our Nursing Home, along with wheelchair bags. But this sounds so much easier/simpler. Has anyone heard of this before? How are they put together, exactly? I'd like to experiment and see how it is accepted around here. Thanks for any input.

If you google wheelchair quilt with pockets or laprobe with pockets you can see some pictures of them. I couldn't find a pattern that was available but you could easily figure it out from the images.

I make shoulder "shawls" using two pieces of flannel sewn together and put pockets in them. People in wheelchairs like them because they can put their hands in them for warmth and also keep whatever they carry around in them. I made some for able bodied friends to try out and they love them for watching tv or whatever. I made up my own pattern (just two yards of flannel folded in half, right sides together, stitched on all four sides, turn right side out and stitch all around, add contrasting pockets and you are done) Couldn't be easier. I've used both manly and feminine fabrics. I've given them away and also sold them at craft shows. Be sure to wear one at the craft show and demonstrate how they work. Can also use fleece.

The shoulder shawl sounds like a great idea and the lap robes also, will keep hands warm.

I'd suggest that the pockets are secured with a button, snap or velcro. It's hell to drop stuff and not be able to pick it up.
