Large bed spread under smaller quilts??
 

I am not even sure I am asking this correctly, but I read somewhere, probably here, that if a quilt is smaller than desired for a bed, using a larger bedspread under it can make it look like it belongs. It would probably be a white bedspread, I think?

I was wanting to experiment with this idea, as I have several quilts that aren't quite large enough for a bed. But I was looking for pictures first, to see if this is an idea I wanted to pursue. I can't seem to word it correctly to google the idea successfully.

Has anyone done this, and are you happy with the results? Thanks for any info.

So can you do it? You bet! And you can do it anyway you like. It seems to especially work well for seasonal/holiday quilts that are too small in order to display them at a specific time of year (winter, Christmas, summer, etc.) and then replace them with another appropriate one.

I have used a long bed ruffle on the top of the mattress as the base. If you sleep with it on there, it doesn't stay in place, but it looked good after I made the bed up. I did have the same ruffle under the top mattress, so it looked like a double ruffle. And the base (bedspread, sheet, whatever) can be any color that you want or that matches your quilt. I do like it better when the base is a solid color. That way the quilt can shine.

As the saying goes ........... your quilt, your house, your rules!
Of course, you can do it.
You said you do have smaller quilts you would like to use, so try it with another larger quilt or bedspread you have and see what you think.

I do it all the time .... flip a bedspread size quilt over to give the plain back.
Then lay my smaller quilt overtop.

I first did this with a large lap Christmas quilt.
Laying over a chair in the family room, did not do it justice. Nor did I truly get to enjoy it!
It fit the top of my double bed.
Just so happened that I had another quilt where the backing coordinated with it.
So the flip over happened.

And no ... it does not have to be white.
The one above is a black and gold backing. Perfectly suited the Christmas front.
I have a light green backed quilt that works well another.

I use a white chenille under my bed runners...I have two made and love the look

I give them to people I love.

I have a blue bed spread under a blue and yellow lap sized quilt in my guest bedroom. I actually prefer that look to a quilt that covers the whole bed.
