Large scale print block

I have a beautiful length of fabric that has bouquets of hydrangeas. The bouquet design measures 8.5 inches square. I don't want to just cut blocks and sash them together, I would like the design to be complemented in a patchwork block. If anyone has a pattern for a block or whole quilt using a big block I would like to see it. I am happy to purchase a pattern if anyone can direct me to one.

DOTTYMO 10-05-2013 05:14 PM

It would be a large block. How about a hunters star with the large triangles as the hydrangea flower in the centre.

AngeliaNR 10-05-2013 05:18 PM

Warm Wishes is available free online. Turning Twenty has a 10 inch square in each block. It isn't available free, but you could google is to see if you like it. TT is typically done with lots of different fabrics, but I've always thought it is pretty with fewer.

There's a book called "Just Can't Cut It" with patterns for quilts that will showcase your fabric.

PaperPrincess 10-05-2013 05:37 PM

check out the BQ patterns ( bq, bq2, bq3...) for large scale prints

How about a Db Wedding Ring, and put a bouquet in the centre of each block.

Peckish 10-05-2013 06:18 PM

I bookmarked this one for the exact same purpose. The measurements are different, this block finishes at 9", but you can always tweak it to enlarge it.

Thanks for posting this... I posted a request for pattern suggestions for central focus fabrics, and this just might be the answer! It's beautiful. I downloaded the free pattern. Yippee!

For a more modern quilt, I saw this today and just love it. It is perfect for a large print. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t231790.html

irishrose 10-05-2013 07:46 PM

I like the one Peckish posted. I have these two saved for a similar fabric.

Here's another one. http://ankastreasures.wordpress.com/...spanish-tiles/

I love Spanish Tiles! I have the pattern, fabrics for it - just need the time :)

Here's a link to a quilt that showcases large cuts - I've made this, it's quick, easy, impressive.

Show up what you come up with!

Thanks for the links. Very pretty pattern.

judylg 10-06-2013 04:45 AM

I do not have any large print fabric, but looking at these different quilts using large scale prints will just have to pick one up when I see the one that strikes my fancy!!

jrhboxers 10-06-2013 05:13 AM

I would use the focal print as a snowball block and alternate with a pieced block of your choice.

This is what came to mind for me, too. I'm partial to Snowball blocks alternated with nine patches. You can make the center of the snowball block as large as needed for the focus fabric.

OH, I love all the sites that you all have added here....and I wasn't even looking for a pattern for a large scale print!!
Thanks!

Pick a pieced block you like and chose color to match your flower.

I like the diagonal movement of this one:

These are some great links for big, beautiful florals... thanks!

BETTY62 10-06-2013 08:39 PM

The Lavender Orchids pattern Peckisk suggested is awesome.

ChrisW 10-07-2013 01:09 AM

Thanks you all so much for the great ideas. Have followed the links and there are so many lovely quilts using large squares. I am sure I will use one of them for my special fabric. Once again thank you all

I used a Double Irish Chain with a large block in the middle between the chain.

Nancy Ziemmen did a beautiful pattern with big flower blocks. Check out her "Sewing with Nancy" site. The pattern is free and I really liked it. I did one block just to see what it would look like with my material that I had picked out and my daughter saw it and kind of hinted on me to make her something out of the block. I think this would be the perfect pattern for what you are looking for.

I have used the pattern "Slide Show" before and I really like it! This pattern is my avatar.

Here is another, similar pattern, for free called "Dewey Block". I haven't tried this one, but I really like the looks of it!

I have made many charity quilts with BQ2. The pattern is an 18" finished blocks but as long as you stay with proportions (this is where Electric Quilt comes in handy), you can make the blocks a smaller. They are really very simple to make. With the bigger blocks, the less blocks you have to make!

krissr 10-07-2013 12:12 PM

Sewing with Nancy just had a program on "big block quilts" that is simple, looks hard and great for big patterns. You can see the program on line.

Do a potato chip or 9-patch pizazz. Not the best of pictures, but you can see how the large print is used and surrounded by the 9-patches. really fun to make, can become addictive.

Mornigstar 10-07-2013 02:33 PM

Love this pattern ==thank you very much for giving the link

BQ by Debbie Bowles...best pattern I've found for things like that. I have made it several times. You cut 12 1/2" blocks...

The first one is a QOV quilttop I just finished, the second one is a t-shirt quilt I made for my grandson's graduation in June, the third is just some cute kids fabric I made up recently. You can use anything for this pattern & can make many sizes.
