I have used a "large stitch" in my quilts for years and love the look when a contrasting color thread is used.
I use Sulky 12 wt. cotton threads (they also have beautiful blended colors), #8 or #12 perle cotton balls, and even #10 crochet thread. The needle I prefer is a Richard Hemming large-eye between in a 7, 8, or 9 size. I quilt in my lap with a 14" round hoop and my stitches are about 5 to the inch (counted only on the front). I love hand quilting, especially in the winter when I can curl up in the quilt as I work! Jan in VA |

A friend of mine has a machine that does long stitching but can't think of the name of it it looked like hand sewing quite neet.I wouldn't put that much money in it tho. Have a blessed day

Is it similar to Shashito? The stitches are deliberate and meant to show.

I have done big stitch quilting on pre-printed baby quilt panels. I just follow the outline of the object in the panel (if it had a teddy bear on it outline the teddy bear for example). They turn out really cute and are fun to do on a pre-printed panel. They work up much faster than regular hand quilting and are great for charity quilts. I have used pearl cotton and a large needle. I haven't tried embroidery floss but imagine it would work well also.

I use it in conjunction with stitch in the ditch by machine. The combination works well, especially on baby quilts but I have used it on tablerunners too. I have used yarn and pearl cotton.

thanks all for the info and pictures. this look is just the thing I will try. I love old fashioned quilts. Simple and colorful. Will check out all the sites suggested.

Kaffe Fassett does this. I saw some of his efforts at quilting in one of his earlier books. He just called it trying to quilt.
