Was cleaning up my sewing room today and came across a pile of sheets and dust ruffles my DD had passed my way. Did you know when you disassemble a dust ruffle how much you get out of it? 6 yards of material 15" wide. And that was a twin!!! and You can use the part that looks and feels just like interfacing for my string quilts!!! Out came the Acuquilt and bam those bad boys are already cut and waiting. I am like WOW..... :thumbup:

and if you don't like the ruffle fabric, that makes a great foundation, too.

we use dust ruffles for binding on give away quilts a lot .....nice long strips for little $

I love any way to save!! Without it, I couldn't afford to do all I do...

Great idea! Our K-Mart closed many years ago and they had a huge going out of business sale and at the end it was either 90% or 95% off - they had a ton of Martha Stewart bed ruffles left. But, I was not into quilting then, but did realize that surely somebody should use that fabric for something.

Yes, I knew there was a great deal of fabric in the dust ruffles, but didn't know how much. I always check to see if it is 100% cotton and I have taken many apart to get the good fabric. I have some blue and white that is to die for and it came from a dust ruffle. There are some beautiful fabrics in dust ruffles.

I made quilts for my 3 GD's they were all from different wildly colorful prints from my stash. The fabrics they chose were from 1971 1989 and 1999. They all had the same shade of pastel pink in common- With scraps in hand I hit 6 stores -no one had that pink. So to make me feel better I thought I would stop at a couple of my favorite ''junk'' stores. I found a full size bed skirt with THAT pink for 50 cents-I still have yards left over after finishing the bindings And my SGD's got the binding color they all chose. They all have the 'eye' for color schemes. and can't wait to start making their own quilts.And my DIL wants to start learning how to make cloths for her and the girls. Who knew a 50 cent score could be so full of blessings : )

What a terrific idea. Several of mine had elastic that stretched out but now I can use it for other things. Thanks so much because I would never have thought of this myself.

I have a couple of old ones hidden away in the hall closet, hmmmmmmmmmmm, I think they just came out of hiding. I really like the idea of using them for bindings

Great idea for binding on utility quilts! I will keep my eyes open for some pretty dust ruffles.

That job is in my future. Had some twin sets given to me by a friend. Comforter, sheets, pillow cases, and dust ruffles. Not my colors but great for quilts.

I bought a cheap twin size mattress cover to use on my big board DH made me last weekend. I 1st covered in in 2 layers of inexpensive batting from Wally world them the mattress cover and finally some muslin. It's wonderful. While DH was stapling all the layers underneath it I was running my hands all over the top, around & around the big board. I'm so proud of him for making it. Usually he can't put a nail in a piece of wood lol but this project turned out perfect!

Yep...there's a lightly used dust ruffle (with the whole sheet top) in a disgusting puce colour (dye project gone wrong) languishing in my linen cupboard....Time to give it a new lease on life:)

Yup! I buy them all the time-have to have a label that states 100% cotton tho-Also pillow cases,table cloths,uniform tops, PJs, sheets-I now have a HUGE stash! Love thrift shops.yard sales etc. It really makes it hard to pay high prices for Quilt shop fabric! Very addictive!

And that's what the original idea of quilting came about. Recycling fabric ( and back then it was all cotton) for another needed purpose. Be it old shirts, bedding, dress's etc, if it's in good condition and good thread count it gets in the bend for quilts. Who said women aren't ingenious.
