I've posted before that my two daughters have no interest at all in sewing or quilting. Well, since I had them both pick out fabric for a quilt my oldest one is getting interested. She is more creative than my middle daughter, she draws and decorates. Tonight when we talked on the phone she asked about making a patriotic quilt (since she saw my design). I told her to look around online and see what she likes.

So she emails me a little while ago with links and comments like:

THE WHITE IN THIS ONE LOOKS LIKE THE WHITE BACKGROUND WITH THE STARS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT. =)

I FOUND THIS FABRIC AT THE HANCOCKS-PADUCAH WEBSITE:

THIS LOOKS GREAT! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING: STARS AND STRIPES AND FIREWORKS

AND THIS ONE WOULD BE GOOD AS ACCENT PIECES SOMEWHERE:

Isn't it great when they begin to understand what it's all about? My daughter can sew, but she only makes Trip Around the World, she has that one down and can do it in any size. So that's okay, at least she sews!

Wish my daughter would convert! She keeps saying "Don't make me any more quilts. I have enough!" Really now, can you EVER have enough? I'm thinking maybe it's like that thing about getting your kids to eat better by having them help in the kitchen. You got her involved in the process, and now she's beginning to see what it's all about. Another score for our side!

Now that is Great! Haven't converted my daughter yet, but she loves quilts and is always wanting a new one, so I feel that I'll get her yet! She is very creative, so it's just a matter of time.

That's excellent! She's well and truly hooked. Now she'll look back and feel bad about not really appreciating how much work has gone into your quilts. :-)

Yea!!! I have 3 daughters, no one quilts......yet.

My daughter works in Arts and Crafts at a very pricey summer camp every year but I cannot get her to quilt. I will not give up though.

Sounds like she is "catching the bug".

I have 3 daughters. My 6 year old only loves that I make her things. My 7 year old is the one who wants to help with the process. She loves help. And at this point I think she will be the seamstress in the family. My 11 year old likes to help to an extent. I bought some panels for her to make pillows. That will let her get some practice using the sewing machine on her own. She has helped me sew on a border, but struggles with keeping a 1/4' seam. A little practice and she will be great!

I hope she does take to it. She draws so maybe she will see that she can essentially do the same thing and make something to use, see and feel with her art.

:thumbup: What wonderful news!! I so love it when someone else is drawn (no pun intended) to let out their creativity with quilting.

My eldest DD is sorta into sewing. I didn't get to do a lot of it when she was little, so she never got into it., but now my youngest DD is really into it.
In June we have a quilt show that a friend and I are going to. At first I said I was making plans for just my friend and myself, but realizing that young DD loves sewing, maybe not as much as I do, I thought she should be able to go to. I told her and she is so excited.

I am sooo feeling your joy. I haven't converted my three yet. They are all really busy, so I'm thinking, when they are a little older. I sewed for most of my life, and wasn't into quilting. I hadn't been exposed to the right stuff.
I had the bug before I came here, but no one to really share with. This board has done so much for me. It's wonderful when you finally have someone in your life, that you can tell about your love for quilting.

I am so happy for you. It great when they learn to love what we love. Neither of my daughters sew at all, but my son and grand daughter love it. I converted my grand daughter early. ( 5 years old. )

Sounds like she just may want to learn to quilt.

Congratulations Pam :thumbup: ....My oldest daughter has a desire one day to sew/quilt. Right now, she is soooo busy, but I've got a bid on my grandaughter, her little girl. The other day, she was sitting across the table with 3 of my strips (that I did not even know she had gotten from my strips that I am working on) and she laid them out like she wanted them and said "This is the way I'm gonna make my quilt"! She is 2 1/2. :D

She's has already gone to a LQS with me. :D She works for a Ford dealer in payroll and warranties and my brakes were squealing on my Escape so she ordered the parts and her fiance, who is a Ford mechanic, replaced the front brakes and rotors. A $450 job that cost me just the parts for $193.

While he did that we went to a LQS where she lives 50 miles from me. She enjoyed looking at the fabrics and patterns and I got her some black, red and white paisley that she particularly liked for a purse. When we got back she told her fiance and she said how nice the ladies were there.

Maybe we do have a better shot at the grandkids sometimes. :wink: We're not so busy raising them ourselves. I have done a quilt with my 8 year old granddaughter.

I have four grands, and one that is five, is really interested. Think I will let her help me put appliques on her little play dress I am making. That will thrill her. She is interested in a lot of things, as long as you do it with her, so I am really gonna come up with some quilty projects that she can participate in, to nurture that along. I looooove it!!!!!!

My daughter has to have everything "match" and has a hard time with all of the colors and different prints that go along with quilting, but... When she saw my b/w fabric for the swap she has laid claim to that quilt when we're done! :wink:

Angie, reading your tag line...and when you never iron, except after pre-washing fabrics, you'll do it till you drop!
I love compliments on my sewing/quilty stuff from my daughters. When I get a thumbs up from one of them, I know i have done good. Got one the other day. :D

Do 24 blocks and tell her she can have half of them if she'll sew them together! :lol:

My dd does not quilt yet but she has picked out fabric and helped to tie charity quilts. I am thinking that one day when she has settled all her schooling etc, she will want to quilt.

Start em young and take them to shows where they can see ALL kinds of quilts! :lol:

That is so cool. You are very lucky that your daughter is taking an interest now. I did not learn to sew and quilt until I was 60, see it is never too late. I am sure my mom would have loved to sew with me.

That's awesome. My daughter is pushing 30 and getting interested. I got her a second hand machine to get her started and gave her some fabrics.

Take heart, I do stained glass too and was never interested in quilting until recently. An extended stay with my sister in Ithaca, as well as a little encouragement on her part got me started. She taught me to sew, at 60 years old, image that. Quilting is very much like doing the designs for stained glass, in fact I have several designs I want to make in the future that were originally stained glass designs. So keep your chin up, anything is possible, lol.

My daughter has Art and Photography majors, so she helps (sometimes) with putting colors together. I would love to teach her how to quilt, but her creative interests are elsewhere. My DIL is just starting to get into the beginning processes of quilting and has been asking about the "how to's" of putting blocks together, which makes me so happy.

Penny, I do stained glass, also. Absolutely love doing it, but need to make a larger workspace in the basement because everything gets so spread out.

I know what you mean about the space. When we moved here in 2004 we started to build a house and it is still not finished. The shell is done and we are just now starting to do the finish work downstairs. On really nice days I will go out into one of the rooms downstairs and work on my glass. I do my quilting on an ironing board in the room I am in now where my computer is. Once we get the downstairs closed in I am going to have a long shelf made in the big garage we have. It is really nice and will be heated so I can make all the mess I want and have plenty of room to work. I CAN NOT WAIT!!!!.

Just another quick note. I remember when I was in my 20's and 30's (even my 40's) My mom use to make crocheted afagan quilts and do needle point on them. She woud sit for hours and hours working her fingers off and I use to wonder what she saw in all that work. I never had the patience to do that kind of thing and thought it was boring. Thank goodness she was able to get me to sit still long enough to teach me to crochet and I still do it to this day. Made a lot of baby blankets that way. I think your age has a lot to do with it as well as were you are in your life. Me I worked all my life except for the first 3 year after my son was born. Now I am retired and can enjoy all these hobbies.
