I just got a kit to make Laura Heine's raw edge applique quilt for my DIL for Christmas....

Have any of you made one? And what do you think of the raw edge technique?

Large flowers are cut from this

I haven't used that company, but the flowers are beautiful. It should make a gorgeous quilt!

I haven't made that particular one, but, raw edge is the only kind I do. Depending on the style, I will blanket stitch or satin stitch around it. If I want a frayed look, I will do just a straight stitch about 1/8" from the edge. In my avatar, I used both satin stitch and straight stitch for the applique. Your kit looks great and the fabric is fabulous.

Thankyou for the compliment. I did it for my youngest DGD in two weeks from start to finish. She absolutely loves it.

A teeny tiny blanket stitch in pale pink would be just gorgous on those flowers.

I found the pattern and the kit.

Thank you for recommending the 1/8" stitch from the edge.. I do want the slightly frayed look around the flowers. I saw this quilt in a quilt shop and fell in love with it immediately... The shop lady said it was something you either loved or hated...

She had hers quilted before adding the applique flowers, then the flowers were quilted too, later. It was a beautiful quilt! Hope mine turns out half as good...

Glad you found it... have you made it yet? since I haven't gotten to mine yet, I would LOVE to see yours...

I was in Laura's shop yesterday (Fiberworks in Billings, Mt). It is a beautiful shop with a gazillion quilts of hers hung on the walls. Also several quilts from other designers using the raw edge applique style. When you see so many together they look great, must be the latest style. She thread embroiders all of the applique pieces until you can hardly see them, and then does a very small stipple stitch on every little square inch of the entire quilt top- she must burn thru 10 miles of thread on every quilt!!
