Left Handed Scissors

I am searching for a pair of left handed sewing scissors. My sewing scissors are and have been missing. YIKES!! My husband got me a beautiful 10 inch pair of Fiskars heavy duty scissors that are suppose to cut through several layers of fabric. But...they are right handed and I can't find them for left handers. What brand and type of sewing scissors to you left handers have? Thanks in advance for your help!!

I’m also left handed but use right handed scissors. Check out Amazon, they do have left handed Fishers (8”).

See if these will work for you... https://www.amazon.com/Leftys-Left-h.../dp/B00IZ7JUHE

Good luck!

I am right handed, so my perspective may be inaccurate. But I use and love the spring loaded scissors from fiskars (https://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-No-8-.../dp/B00006IFNC). I believe the grip would be acceptable for a left handed person, but I don't know about any other features that may need to be considered. just thought I would *try* to help.

I got myself these as a gift last spring:

They are absolutely amazing - definitely worth the money to get high quality, true left-handed scissors. They cut like a hot knife through butter.

I also have a nice pair of true left-handed Henckels, but I've had them since 1987 so I don't know where you would find them nowadays.

FYI for right handed people: true left-handed scissors are mirror images of right handed. If you set a pair of right handed scissors open on the table in front of you, the top blade will cross from upper left to lower right. On left handed scissors, the top blade goes from upper right to lower left. This allows the blades to be naturally squeezed together When cutting, and also puts the outside blade on top of the material so it's easier to follow a marked line.

Someone on the board was looking for a specific type of left-handed scissors and couldn't find them anywhere. She contacted Kai and they actually made a pair for her. She was so happy with those scissors and the excellent customer service.

I have bought left-handed scissors by Fiskars from Joann. With a coupon, they were about $10. Those Kai scissors are supposed to be really nice.

Mine were a gift from my mother many years ago. They are made by Singer. They are my treasure. I also have a pair made by Gingher...still available. Gingher is now owned by Fisher.

I have many scissors but my absolute favorite are Kai. They are fantastic!!!

Mine were a gift from my mother some 60+ years ago. They are Wiss left handed sheers. I got the for my first home ec. class in junior high school. They have been sharpened many times over the years and due again. They have a great fit and are an 8" blade. I am not sure if they are even made anymore but they were reasonable for years.

I'm left handed too and I'd been given Fiskars right handed scissors at one time...gosh...they hurt! They would probably be great if they were molded for left-handers, but I had to throw the right handed ones away. Left handed scissors are hard for me to find locally. I've finally settled on scissors that are neutral and they work fine.

Snooze2978 12-28-2020 08:08 AM

I'm left handed but have never been able to use left handed scissors, I've adapted using the right handed type.

Karamarie 12-28-2020 08:21 AM

Many years ago, my Mother-in-Law gave me a Gingher left-handed scissor. I guard it with my life. My husband and children learned early on, that nobody uses that scissor except me. I have only had it scharpened once in 30 years and still cuts like new. Another thing that is odd for left-handed folks, is knives. Because of the slant of the blade, anything you cut slants - especially bread. I could go on forever about things that don't work as well for left handers but It definitely is a right-handed world so we have to adapt. When you think about it, even cars have the main controls on the right, keyboards have more of the keys on the right, most doors are right handed. When we moved into our new townhome, we had a spray nozzle installed in the kitchen sink and that is on the right side-have found that is very awkward for me. Am just glad either of my kids is left-handed, but one of the grands is left-handed. Another whining.

My young grandson is the only lefty in the family so I started to buy left hand scissors when I saw them. It's hard to find left hand school scissors for little hands. I cannot cut with left hand scissors so I know how he feels trying to use right hand scissors. His first grade teacher (her first year of teaching) actually told my daughter that he will need to learn to use right hand scissors in her class. He never went back to her classroom.

Cheshirepat 12-28-2020 02:01 PM

My 'true-lefty' Ginghers are about 20 years old now, and they still cut like new - it was a huge splurge for me at the time, but worth every penny. If they ever go missing, I'd really cry!

sewingsuz 12-28-2020 02:15 PM

Zwillingis what it says on my left handed scissors. I have had them for a long time. I bought a ginger sharpening stone and It has instructions how to sharppen them.

I was curious about these points and my right-handed privilege, so I asked my husband, who is left-handed, about your comments and how he feels about living in a right-handed world. He said some knives are sharpened on a slant, depending on the intended use of the knife, but the majority the ones we own are on point so that doesn't bother him. American cars are built with the driver's side on the left, so there is actually more space on the right for controls; the opposite is true for British cars. He pointed out that right-handed doors are only right-handed on one side - if you are opening the door from the other side, it's left-handed. 😆 I'd never thought about that before, lol! He said being left-handed doesn't bother him nearly as much as living in a world made for short people. He's 6'3", he has a hard time fitting into most cars, airplane seats are super tight, shower heads hit him in the chest, his feet hang off the end of our (king!) bed, chairs/couches are too short and shallow for him to relax... I guess we all have our crosses to bear. 😉

Cheshirepat 12-28-2020 03:23 PM

Ha, that's funny Peckish! My 6'1" hubby would agree. I however, as an official shortie (5'1" on a good day) have a great need for said tallness! Especially in the kitchen, dang shelves are made for giants, not 'normal height' folks like me! :D I guess it's not so much fitting into a right-handed world, it's having the few tools that *need* to be, be left-handed or at least left-friendly.

mjkgquilt 12-28-2020 05:09 PM

I consider myself a "lefty". Was 9 years old when I switched to eating with my right hand so no one would
bump me. Learned to knit, crochet and tat by following pictures in a "Learn How" book. Mostly I use my left hand for handstitching. Cut fabric/paper with my right hand because it is easier for me. Shorthand teacher in high school told me I could not write shorthand and showed her she was wrong. Passed my 120 words for 5 minute test without a problem. Told second grade teacher I turn my paper the opposite direction to what right-handed people do when righting. Be adjustable is my motto!

Kai scissors are made in China. Fiskars are made in Finland.

That is incorrect. Kai scissors are made in Japan.

Thank you for all your responses. They were all very helpful. I have used Fisker right handed scissors for many years and cutting heavy fabric or multiple layers hurts. Years ago I bought an inexpensive true left handed pair of scissors and really had trouble cutting and my cutting edge was always off. After reading all your responses, I went to Kai website and purchased an 8 1/2 inch pair of left handed scissors, that are not true left handed but instead are right handed scissors with the handles changed. The price was $22.88 with free shipping so I did not think that was bad. I can't wait to get them. I think they will be perfect for me. Thanks again.

Peckish 12-29-2020 05:55 PM

I think you will be happy! I find their handles to be the most comfy. When you get them, come back and let us know what you think.

Onebyone 12-30-2020 11:26 AM

There is furniture made for tall people. My husband is 6ft, not overly tall but enough to feel cramped sometimes. Our bed is longer, Chest of drawers (I can't see in his top chest drawer) recliner, his feet doesn't go over the foot rest, his vehicle is a truck so he doesn't have any leg room problem. Our house had tall ceilings and that makes a difference in how he feels and the one most great thing is a shower head that is taller then he is. LOL

My Kai scissors arrived. They are not true left handed scissors, but since I have used right handed scissors, I got the not true left handed scissors but have the handles reversed.
YIKES! These scissors are unbelievable. I put 4 layers of scraps together and they cut through them like I was cutting through nothing. I just moved my thumb and they cut with no pressure. I am an old gal and I have never had a pair of scissors in my hand like these. I am a little afraid of them because I know I have to be very careful because they are so sharp.
Thanks for all of your responses!!

Peckish 01-18-2021 07:17 PM

Oh I'm so glad you like them!

SusieQOH 01-18-2021 07:28 PM

I'm so happy for you too. They are my very favorites!

I bought those for my granddaughter, she loves them, said they are the first scissors she can really use.
