Left handed Tri-Rec tool
 

I have been using my tri-rec tool lately. On the rec tool, at first I thought, gee, why do I always have to turn the tool face down (where the lettering and numbering are backwards) or turn the fabric at an angle to cut the triangles? What a silly design.

And then I realized...

It's because I'm left-handed and the tool is designed for righties. If I were to use the recs tool face-up with the fabric strip perpendicular to me, I'd have to cut the triangles toward myself.

Try it if you don't believe me ;-).

Has anyone run across left-handed tri-recs pairs (really I would only need the recs tool to be that way, since the tri tool is symmetrical)?

I can use the tool backwards, but it's annoying that the numbering is always backwards.

I found leftie-rightie rulers, just not tri-recs.

Never realized what lefties must go thru.

I would contact the company. They should be able to answer your questions.

I am a righty and use the Tri-Rec both facing up and down, depending on what cut I want to make. The side piece that mates with the main triangle must be used both face up and face down to get both left and right side cuts.

TeresaA, being left-handed, I know where you are coming from. The Easy Angle is also the same way for me. I just adapt and use them upside down (meaning lettering face down). I will be interested to learn if there are tri-recs for left-handers.

I would strongly suggest that you look at Deb Tucker's rulers - you do not have to turn them upside down, and she posts cutting instructions for right AND left handed cutters on both her videos and her rulers (tools). I believe hers result in a more accurate block - and I have and have used both TriRecs and hers.......check the videos out on her website...Good Luck!

If you fold your fabric with wrong or right sides together, a righty can always use the Rec tool face up. Even if you're doing a scrappy quilt, you can pile your scrap strips so that you can always use the Rec tool face up.

If a lefty does this, the tool always has to be face down.

I know it can be done! It's just annoying, is all.

Us lefties truly live in a right-handed world!

rotate the strips until you find a comfortable cutting angle.
No need to flip the ruler to face-down.

Can you cut the fabric upside down? I do that sometimes as well, to get the piece I want.

I'm also left handed in this "right-handed" world so I've just adapted the best I can. I tried a pair of left handed scissors and I couldn't get use to them, went back to my right handed ones and used them on my left hand. Didn't see any problems with them. As to rotary cutting I've learned to cut from the right side going left these days. As to the rulers I just turn them upside down or backwards cause I'm sure if they did make left-handed stuff for us they'd also charge more for them too as there wouldn't be enough market otherwise.

I find that just going with the flow and not trying to fight the system the best way to keep my sanity and less stress.

This has been a really interesting read. I am right handed through and through but I have 2 granddaghters who are left handed. Hopefully I will remember some of these tips when they get old enough to cut in a few years. My one good quilting bud who is left handed has learned to cut with her right as well as she does with her left. I've seen her cut up one side of the ruler with one hand and back down the other with the other hand.

Yeah, Sandra, but remember, we lefties are always in our right mind!

I have a question for those of you who turn your ruler over. Do you have any problem with accuracy? I think I read once that your lines are as precise when viewed from wrong side. Anyone notice any difference?

You are more than welcome.......Being a leftie, taught by righties, makes me crazy sometimes.....But with all of her tools, I can easily cut left handed, and accurately!......Enjoy!

It's a right handed world for sure...been dealing with it all my life...scissors are the worst but thank goodness they do make left handed ones....
