Left over HST's

What do you do with left over HST's? I have a ton of them due to a man changing his mind on colors for a Carpenters Square quilt.

Can I ask for pictures on this thread?

I make scraps into HSTs sometimes for an eventual HST scrap quilt. Search HST quilts for ideas. Can also make a lovely Jewel Box/ Jacobs Ladder quilt with some 4 patches using the same colors. Depression blocks are nice.

Seriously - you can do ANYTHING. But I hope you gave the male flip-flopper a good talking to about wasting your time.

can you find a way to incorporate the original HSTs into the backing of the final quilt if they are still semi coordinated with the officially chosen colors?

How about a temperature quilt if you have plenty of color combos?

There are an awful lot of star patterns that can be made using just HSTs. Depending on what colours/combinations you have, you could make a bunch that are the same or look for different patterns based on a standard grid to put together into a sampler or something.

If you're better at playing with value than I am, you could also do some great illusion/3D stuff, again depending on what you have.

Look through Bonnie Hunter’s Quiltville site under her Free Pattern tab. There may be a pattern there you can use your pieces in.

Here are two examples of Barn Raising quilts. All HSTs and likely one of my favorite patterns. Number one is from 2013 and the second from 2021. The second is offset so the center is not in the center of the quilt. Barn raising works for adult sized down to baby quilts. You can also just line up the HSTs like little rows of sail boats or flip flop them in all different directions like confetti tossed in the air. My suggestions is to just start laying them out until you find a "look" that pleases you. Oh and you can make pinwheels with them too. A very versatile little block. Fun, fun, fun!

I've put them into my borders and even onto the backside if necessary to use them up.

You can always make a depression block with it the pattern is found here : https://www.quilterscache.com/D/DepressionBlock.html It is a great scrappy block and a fun pattern for HST's

All good suggestions! My Quilting 101 teacher told us that if you can master half square triangles, you have mastered 99% of quilting!

I got pretty good at them and they are the foundation of a crazy amount of quilt blocks, but I found all the usual methods of making them incredibly time consuming. I finally went to printing my own sheets of HST papers, which I sew up as a kind of leaders & enders project, or for therapy sewing...I like the papers generated by "Triangulations". Don't know what I would do without that software!
