Left over triangles
I have so many leftover triangles from past quilt projects. They are all different sizes so I'm having a problem using them. What do you do with left over triangles?

I haven't assembled mine yet, but when I do, I will probably use some on a quilt back to add some interest to it. Smaller ones I could do several rows, larger ones maybe 1-2 rows. Whatever inspires me at that moment in time. :)

I pitch them. Life is too short. I just want to make more of them. ;)

I have started making pinwheels with triangles. Larger triangles are subcut into smaller pieces and sewn into HSTs. Then the HSTs are cut down to 2-1/2" blocks. I plan to do a simple 2-block quilt with pinwheels and solid blocks when I have enough of them.

it depends on size. You can make flying geese or HSTs. Maybe pass them on to someone who will enjoy using them.

I save them up and make a pin wheel quilt, the last one I made, which was a small quilt. I donated to our local Humane Society for a fund raising event, it auctioned off for $100, which I thought was a good price. If you don't want to use them, how about posting them on the board.

I make mini log cabin blocks by paper piecing with 1/4 grid graph paper. I used to make HST's but never used them.

One of the quilters that I know has a friend that appliques and uses a lot of smaller pieces. So I keep a bag handy and when I get something, toss it into the bag. Feel like someone is getting some benefit and if she pitches them, that's fine too.

I have been 'collecting' 2.5 HST for a few year. Mine were also 'leftovers' to use one day. I had made some mondo bags and decided to do another. They take 2.5 squares, {{lightbulb}} what about all (204) those HST. The bag takes 208, so I cut down some 3.5 (also saving for 'some day').

I've got a box just for those leftover triangles. I'm using them to make Wild and Goosey blocks. It's a Bonnie Hunter pattern that appeared in Quiltmaker magazine: http://www.quiltmaker.com/articles/Wild___Goosey
The blocks are very small and make great use of little bitty scrap triangles. |
I had some small ones (made into hst's) and used them as borders on a patriotic quilt , but had added corners to them to make them larger. square in a square.
also used some up from snow ball blocks and used them in the inner border on that quilt. did sort of a zig zag with them. |
Depends on the size. Most get a decent burial. froggyintexas

Thanks for all the suggestions. Great bag and quilt!!!! Now to go through and see how many I have that are the same size. Another project in the making.

Make a Lady of the Lake quilt out of the leftovers. Makes a great scrappy quilt.

All great ideas. Thanks

Depending on the size and what pattern I'm working on I've used them on the border to add a little extra character. Here's a couple I've used the cut-offs on........... Otherwise they get thrown into a small tote I keep them in until I find a use. Maybe make a pillow to go with the quilt you're working on.

I keep all leftover blocks and pieces....the blocks are saved until I have enought to make a VERY scrappy and wild quilt top (grandkids love em)....all pieces get tossed into a tub until there is enough to mess with, then all get cut down into usable size squares or strips.

Bonnie Hunter has so many pattern that use small leftover triangles and squares. Check her website and her several books

Last year I made a whole quilt in order to use up leftover triangles. But I don't think I would do it again. I agree that sometimes life is too short; if you like them enough to keep them and create some project from them, great. If not, pitch them and don't look back.

Here's a thread I started a while ago...you'd be pleased to know that the UFO's are now finished with the basket quilt hanging in my LR. I have used several small HST's in mini quilts and donate them to fundraisers. Like pocoellie says they are well worth the effort as they have brought in over $100 each
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...m-t169510.html Don't be afraid to cut them so you have all the same size...remember they are leftovers after all. |
Love it. The colors look so cool together.

oksewglad, Loved what you did with your HSTs.
