Let's see those 70's color themed quilt!
 

I want to make a quilt for a friend. He is 27 and in love with the 70's colors. Bleh yuck! I really don't understand the fascination but it is one that he has had since we were kids. We first met when I was 13 and he was 15. So he is pretty special to me. One of the few people that I can truly call a friend for life. Thick and thin he has always been there. So this quilt is pretty special. I want it to be perfect. Ideally I am shooting to get this done in time for Christmas so I really need to get going on it!

Ok here is my questions: What colors just scream take me back to the 70's? Should I stick with solids or what? Any suggestions on a pattern but nothing too terribly hard and time consuming? Oh and don't forget it needs to be "man appropriate." I would love to see pictures of what you have all done!

The 70s....I was just a little one but I remember the muted colors in my parents house. Olive, rust, brown. And then there was our living room done in red and black velvet curtains in the winter and blue velvet in the summer, YUK! I think you could get by with solids in the muted colors with a modern pattern. I'd do a search on google for modern quilt patterns and you should find what you need.

olive harvest gold brown and rust were very popular back then in decorating.

How about tie dye and peace signs? Other than that, only harvest gold and olive green come to mind.

um - polyester was a big deal when it came out - should be easy to find - nah.... seersucker and dotted Swiss and brocade for texture - lots of texture - we had all sorts of prints back in the day...
Olive green, burnt orange, harvest gold, coppertone brown and turquoise for colors - add in black or white
My MIL had a bright orange carpet and a green couch in her living room. ew... curtains - some kind of geometric on a white back ground. She also had a blue chair she loved so she covered it with a throw of some kind. She never has had good taste...

We has gold shag carpet in the sunken den....white brick fireplace...dark brown crushed velvet couch...zebra print velvet wingback chair with ottoman and gold and orange velvet club chairs.... also had zebra velour bedspread and drapes in bedroom with white sheers and gold tiebacks for the drapes....as I recall the majority of the colors were the avocado green, harvest golds, burnt oranges, dark wood tones....jewel tone colors for the most part. Oh doG! The horrors of the 70's. Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, rust and orange. When we bought our first house it was carpeted entirely in indoor/outdoor carpet with a paisley print of all those colors, the pink counter tops in the kitchen added to the glory. My ex LOVED it! He is an ex for a reason. I thought he had good taste because he chose me - that is where his good taste ended.

Look up 'That Seventies Show' you may find it on YouTube or Netflix. It will offer up a plethora of bad interior design and color combinations.

I met my future husband in 1969 and the decor in his parents house was definitely '70s. The problem was...nothing ever changed...lol. His mother died in 2002 and his dad finally had to move to a retirement condo in April of 2007 and died 6 months later on his birthday at 88 years old. Their carpet was dark green, gold drapes in the living room and dining room, sofa and chairs were dark orange and when flipping the cushions they had a white background with big orange flowers with long green stems in a swirl pattern. That furniture went with him...you sat on the sofa or chairs and needed a crane to get you up...lol.

Through the '70s our homes had gold carpet, rust carpet and dark orange carpet. Sofa was country plaid...dark brown, light brown, rust and orange. One house had an avacado green refrigerator and the next it was coppertone. In '76 we bought a house that we really loved and at first it had the '70s look with dark paneling etc. but we finally got sick of it and remodeled and changed colors. Then in '95 we moved into our brand newly built dream house and no reminders of all of those dark brown, rust, orange and gold colors.

Our 3rd home had a pink kitchen...countertop, sink and refrigerator. I had NEVER seen that before anywhere. Before we moved in the kitchen was gutted...lol.

I have a daughter that is into 70's retro. I have been looking for fabric too. I found this one, I'm considering building off off of it.

In the 70's I had bright orange shag carpet. One wall was bright orange and the other 3 walls bright green. The drapes were big flowers oranges, yellow and greens. Also had black leather furniture. Was that gaudy or what? My double front doors were also orange. Reminds me of the Brady Bunch show.

Yes, earth tones were very popular, the olives, rust, gold but what I remember most was the orange. Peter Max was popular and had a lot of psychedelic posters that the "hippies" freaked out to while smoking a joint...LOL Peace signs, anything with parts exaggerated, etc. I was a teen in the 70's and had a '73 yellow Pinto (look it up) with an 8-track player (look it up)...LOL Corduroys, denim, and polyester were pretty popular. I seem to remember a dotted swiss dress that I made that was, well, very, very short...LOL Oh, the good old days! Go bright and anything goes! Tie dye was really popular too!

Ahhh the 70's LOL rust, olive, burnt orange, harvest golds, dark browns... but what I remember and love the most? Were the bright neon colors! Hot Pink, Tangerine Orange, Lime Green, Electric Blue.... What colors does HE have in mind? :) :) :)

Remember the coppertone, olive green, yellow cookstoves and refrigerators :) I had my kitchen in tangerine orange once. My kids hated it lol :)

I was born in 1960 - so the 70's are wonderful memories for me. Yes to the avocado and orange for home decor, but for everything else ... brights! Pinks, yellow's, greens, oranges. Think giant daisy's. Flower Power man. Woodstock. Hair. Wild plaid skinny leg pants - paired with flowered shirts and tie died scarfs. White patent leather go-go boots. And apparently it's when girls legs were invented cause before the mini-skirt we weren't quite sure how far up they went.

Use Google Image Search using the following: Peter Max, VW Bus (most of them were wildly painted), Flower Power, and Woodstock.

Some designers that you will probably have good luck finding the right stuff for .... Amy Butler, Anne Kelle (check out her "remix" line - the argyles, the flowers, the butterfly's), Heidi Dobrutt - just to name a few. Above all else - don't be afraid to mix it up - plaids with flowers were far out man, matching prints were a drag! (ahem ... "far out" = good, "drag" = bad :) )

Back it with an orange, rust, brown, & yellow shag rug lol.

This is all that's left of a couch we bought - I think in 1975 or 1976. I still like the fabric - if I could get an exact duplicate of that couch in good condition - I'd be deliriously happy!

The 70's were my high school days & I love paisley, so your fabric choice is right on!

I made this quilt for my granddaughter a few years ago. The fabrics reminded me of the 70's. Yeah, I was there...
