Lets talk machines needles. Difference between All Purpose and Quilting needle

I was in Joanns yesterday picking up some needles and realized for the first time that there are "Quilting Needles", All Purpose needles and then many others that don't apply. I had been purchasing the All Purpose needles, but picked up the Quilting 90/14 needle pack. The QN's are twice as much as the All Purpose. Is there really a difference between the 2 that justifies the cost increase.

Also, what size needles do you use for piecing and quilting.

Thanks for your time.

This video has a lot of good information. I know he is selling needles, but he also explains how/why certain needles work better than others.

Very interesting youtube video. For the flip side below is a link to the Schmetz website with an explanation of the different needles.

I guess it is like most everything else quilting/sewing - comes down to preference (yours and the machines). Sort of like thread. Some machines seem picky about the type of thread, other machines seem to prefer one thread over the other. I found that my stitches on one of my machines weren't as nice/consistent when I used the Quilting Needles (though on another machine that I have - these needles aren't a problem).

I use quilting needles for piecing and I normally use 75/11. For quilting I use topstitch needles and normally use 80/12. Excellent information from Schmetz, http://www.schmetzneedles.com/learni...ut-needles.htm

A great place to buy needles at a reasonable price, http://www.discountembroiderysupply.com/

I use organ needles or schmetz, what the manual says to use. Repairman only puts Singer needles in them, I replace them.

All the information you'll need to know about any machine needle can be found in the book "Point Well Taken" which can be found here http://pointwelltakenbook.com/. I still refer to it regularly after 14 years, a godsend!

For piecing I use
75/11 or 80/12 because I use thin thread for piecing, usually 50 2 ply or higher. For any thread that is 50wt 3 ply or 40 I use 90/14. Topstitch needles are the type I use the most. Singer needles are the best for FW and vintage Singer machines. The are a teeny tiny bit different is length.
