Our town is celebrating 125 years and we are raising money for a new library. I would like to organize a committee after Christmas to make a library quilt to auction. If anyone has done one of these or organized a committee please make suggestions.

can't help! BUT there's a free pattern out there - that has a bookcase, some books- both upright & laying on their sides. w/ a frog or lizard crawling away- might be an interesting tie in! Liked the pattern but didn't have a use for it! GOOD LUCK!!!

This is a link to some quilt block ideas to get you started. If possible, I think it would be nice to have the blocks made by many different people and then assembled. To keep the quilt consistent, you might have to specify or even provide the background fabric. Because this pattern adds the shelves later as sashing, you'd have total control over that. Since it it paper pieced, many skill levels should be able to return a usable block to you. Maybe ask the makers to included at least one favorite book name on the spines.

I think one of Georgia Bonesteel's books has a pattern for a "book" quilt.
It shows the spine of book with different titles ... you could have each
person embroider their favorite title on the spine.

Our library handed out muslin squares, we were to do what ever we wanted to them, leaving atleast a 1/2" around the borders of the block empty.
They collected the blocks, sewed them together with sashingborders and then auctioned off the quilts.
I can't remember what the theme was now, but it helped to unify the quilt blocks :D:D:D
