I have a Jem Gold (which I leave at an all day Open Sew where I go twice a week) and a Jem Platinum which is my everyday home machine
They are both lightweight and I love both of them If I could only have one, I'd get the Platinum as it has needle down function and, more important, does a scant 1/4". I also have a Bernina which was always my workhorse and I still use it to machine quilt. It's 20+ yrs old and very heavy. |
I have a 12 lb. 3160 that I absolutely love! It's a full size machine and has needle down and the auto thread cutter. I just love it!

I bought a Janome 8050 at Hancock's to take with me for charity sewing and I love it. It's very lightweight and does a great job.

I have two Janome Jem Golds and they are years old and no problem at all from either one. Kids sew on them, beginner sewers and a couple of nephews who had a who can make the machine go faster race and the Jems are still sewing like new.

I have the Jem Gold, too, and I take it to classes and QOV groups and have never had a problem.

For a small light weight machine I will take a vintage Singer featherweight any day. I have 3 and they take turns going with me to classes and quilt groups. If you feel a need for reverse try their big sister the Singer 301.

Have never tried a Janome, but I love my Featherweight! :)

I have a Babylock Audrey. Love it.

Another happy Jem Gold owner here. I've had it for 7? years now. Like anything, clean and oil it.

I have a Featherweight, and it does reverse. Do some not go in reverse????

I have this machine -- it is what I take to class and group sews and also what I try to sneal upstairs to sew on until DH complains. I love it because of the weight and because it has needle down and auto thread cutter and a bigger harp than the Gold or Platinum (I have had both). A good buddy got the 3160 and is using it as her main machine -- when she took it to class I was using the Platinum and I had machine envy. My main machine is the Horizon 7700 and I really was missing the thread cutter sewing with the Platinum.
