On line fabric colors

I have just ordered fabric one time. I am wondering , how easy or hard is it to match colors.
I see such beautiful colors, but I'm scared, that when I get them they won't go together.

Often you can call the shop that you are ordering from and they will let you know if the fabrics are in harmony together. The colors on computer monitors vary sooooo much! Unless you are ordering from the same collection, sometimes it can be a crap shoot! Usually, if I get fabrics that don't go together as I planned, I will just try again. I can always use more stash!

equilter.com has a color matching device on their site that has been fool proof for me. I have NEVER had a bad purchase from this site. They sell LQS quality - first rate, premium! If you are looking for a particular shade of red, for instance, you can find that shade and then their device will bring up every other piece of fabric that has that same shade of red in it that they are selling. After that it is up to you to pick what you like. I find that after you consider mailing costs their prices are still a little bit cheaper than my going to a LQS because I have a high gasoline cost to get to a LQS and they do not have hundreds of bolts to choose from. This is the only on line fabric site that I've used that has the feature to locate matching colors in all the fabric choices.

TanyaL,

Thanks for the tip about equilter.com. I will definitely try that site when buying fabric in the future.

equilter.com is an excellent company to order from. I have gotten quite a bit of fabric from them.

Thanks for the tip on equilter.com.

So far the only time I needed to match colors, I was using Missouri Star Quilting Co and I just sent an email asking what color went well with a particular fabric and she sent me 3 colors and told me how much they had in stock. It was a perfect match!

Colors vary in the way they are presented, and in the way you view them as each monitor can be slightly different.

The best advice is to buy your coordinates from the same product line as the focus fabric, or to use the same manufacturers blender lines. Several of the manufacturers use a standard color palette that is also used in their blender lines.

When in doubt, call the shop -- most of them will be happy to send you small samples to help you select just the right one before you order larger amounts.

Thankyou very much for all the info. I think I'll phone them the next time I want to order. This board has been such great help. THANKYOU.

One thing to keep in mind.. because dye lots change a tad each time, even if you order the exact same fabric your new order may be a bit off. I had that happen when I misjudged the amount of border fabric I needed and tried to buy more. My LQS was out, so I ordered online. This became a learning moment for me, so I just added the new yardage to my stash and did a little redesign of my border to make the original fabric work out.
