I just bought a used little gracie quilting frame cheap. I will set it up after the holidays my new sewing machine is in the shop anyway. The frame is 2nd hand but never been used looks brand new. I think I can learn on this frame then up-grade if I like quilting. My question is the instruction book says the max pattern width is 4". Where can I get these patterns? I am new to the quilting aspect of this so any and all suggests and or help would be great. Is this large enough to be worth while? Can you make your own patterns or does most of you just free hand?

Yes it will serve it's purpose for you. You can make your own patographs buy printing them up on the computer and taping them together some use a sylis others use a laser pointer. I like the laser idea I have yet to put mine together because of a few mising screws could be me with the loose screws we will have to see! Good luck and congrats you will have so much fun!

It just means that once you get to the end of the quilt and it's all rolled up on the rod that is inside the throat of your machine, the space available to quilt will only be 4" wide.
There are lots of patterns for 4". Try urbanelementz.
It is also great for freemotion, just let your hands flow.

I think everyone has a different approach to this....but me personally I like to do most everything freehand....if I were you I would start with just some muslin on the frame and do some practicing....just to get the feel of what you are dealing with and while you are practicing you will be able to try out some of your own personal ideas and designs. I have the little Gracie and I can use 5 inch pantographs and on smaller quilt I can use a 6 inch with no problem, I have a Juki on my frame.
