A little help fixing machine?
Hello, I've been working on a coat with my machine for a while and I'm at the final stitch to hem the bottom and the machine I have which is a Singer 7462 has decided to not work with me anymore on this.
I had already gotten it repaired by a repair expert and they said it'll never sew like it used to. The machine won't form a stitch when I fold fabric over to hem the final part, though it would appear that the needle does penetrate. I sometimes crank the handwheel manually and do all the stitching manually when sewing on heavier duty fabric that the machine can't handle, I've broken quite a few needles already hoping the machine would penetrate but if I just go slow it has worked fine. Weirdly, it has penetrated and formed a stitch on other heavy folded parts of the coat... But it just won't seem to form a stitch for my final hem. It's as if the hook won't catch the thread, but I have no idea what to do about that. I had already torn the machine apart and tried to adjust the shaft timing, but my hex key wouldn't budge so that's when I decided to take it to a repairman who said I made the machine worse taking it apart. What can I do to get this machine to at least manually stitch again on heavy quilts? It will run fine on light fabric. What can I do to check and learn more about what the problem is?? I'm thinking of taking my project to a tailor just so they can sew the last line of stitching for 10 dollars if that's how cheap it might be, but that's quite a hassle. A little extra information if maybe this is relevant: The bobbin case knocks around each time the shuttle hook passes. Not sure why, it's kind of loose. I'm not sure what seems to be hitting it. |
The it back to your repair shop and tell them I is not working and ho it I not sewing.

Well I guess I could call him again and ask him questions but that was a while ago.
Do you have any suggestions? |
Could it be your needle? Are you using a heavy duty needle?
|
I would put in a brand new and larger needle. If you're using a size 12, go to a 14 or 16.
|
Personally, I wouldn't spend any more time or expense on the machine, I would look for a vintage machine, service it and it will last probably forever. In my opinion, the new Singers aren't worth buying.

Be sure to increase the presser foot pressure when working with thick fabric. That bobbin issue sounds troubling.

This is why I have back up machine.

I GOT IT FIXED
It was the exact same problem as my last thread. Ignore this thread, would delete if i could. |
Yay! I'm glad you fixed it!

The issue was basically that the shuttle hook would not catch the upper thread if the material was too thick, and I fixed it by adjusting the needle position all the way to the right to make the hook timing a little sooner so there's no way it would miss the thread and I was able to manually crank the handwheel all the way until the sewing job on the thick material was done. I tailored my coat! Completely tailored, first time using a machine and doing something of such a big job and it came out great. Looks exactly like it did before just shorter and thinner. Was a lot of work because as you know winter coats have batting in them and such. |
You figured it out and got the job done! We'd love to see a picture of the finished coat!
