Is anyone else sewing pillowcase dresses for little girls in
africa? I saw it on TV and went to the web site www.littledressesforafrica.com
and got hooked by the photos and how cute the little black girls looked. I made 15 dresses and sent them to the Minnesota address. I get the pillowcases at 2nd hand stores and chop away. Adding pockets or lace is optional. Using new fabric is optional. I hope this web site works for you so you can see the photos.
Come join me in sending hope to little girls.

Our quilt guild is setting up workshops to make these dresses. They are so cute, and I'm told easy to make (I couldn't make it to the workshop but will be at the next one). We had some samples at our Quilt Show (which is TODAY), and they are adorable.

I purchased 3 sets of cases at WM's and have them washed and waiting to sew. I will take the little bag the cases came in and add a strap to make a bag to send along.
I too love to see the smiles on their faces.

Soon as I can, I want to make some britches for the boys. I used to make them for my DS when he was younger. It would take too much fabric to cover his 6'3" frame now.

I am trying to find the time to fit this in. I will hopefully make some soon.

I am thrilled that people are answering the call to make pillowcase dresses for Africa. We have so much and they have so little. I hope to find a resource to give baby quilts to that can afford to send them to Africa also.

There is another group making the dresses especially for Hati. A local shop had a work day last week and have 75 dresses in process and 35 shorts. I talked with the folk at Dresses for Africa and they said they don't get many shorts for the boys. I made the samples and the dress took me about 30 min and the shorts less. We put draw strings in the shorts as it would be difficult to estimate the size of the elastic. We used regular fabric and with a 45" piece of 45" (or so) fabric you can get at least two from the tube you make. the size depends on the length so a 45" length could make 3 of the smaller ones. We set up an assembly line with some serging the edges while others but arm holes and others put in elastic, etc etc etc. We made the draw strongs from double folded bias tape.
