Hi, Yesterday I decided to pick from my stash, fabrics to make a log cabin quilt. However, I don't have enough to make the quilt as big as I would like. Have any of you made the log cabin block and then put sashing around each block. I know it will loose the actual "log cabin" effect, but just curious as to what it would look like.
If anyone has done this, would love to see a photo.
I am determined to do this without purchasing ANY new fabric.
Thanks all - so appreciative of you and your opinions. :)

I haven't done it, but it sounds like an interesting idea. Could you make a few blocks and try the sashing between just to get an idea if it will look like you want it to? Keep us posted on how it goes!

If you have enough blocks could you put four together to make a design and than use sashing? Just a thought.

I made a log cabin with and without in EQ6 to give you and idea how it will change the looks. Hope this helps.

I like it both ways. I may have to try this myself.

All I can say is its beautiful no matter how you put it.

Another option would be instead of sashing, just use multiple borders with fairly wide widths.

It's not a terribly conventional log cabin quilt, it's a species we've decided is a crazy log cabin, but it has sashing so here it is. I'm quilting it right now, I'm doing Welsh quilting designs.

I made 29 blocks in that set and the rest went into a quilt without sashing.

Apart from a slight colour bias - the first quilt leans more towards the lighter blocks with greens rather than pinks - they're all constructed exactly the same way. Unfortunately I don't have a finished photo of the second quilt, I forgot to photograph it before sending it off and the recipient hasn't sent me a pic yet. It had a very nifty multicoloured binding made from scraps.

The whole set started off as an extremely badly cut jelly roll, and I added in fabrics from my stash. The finished strip widths were 2", 1", 2.25" and 0.75", and each block was 11".

Looking at those EQ examples, I think that with the right sashing you can still very much get the log cabin effect. The quilting design I'm using on the first quilt is basically a medallion-style design that goes over all the blocks, and I've just skipped the sashing and put cables in there instead. The design still continues beautifully between the blocks, as you can see at http://lobsterdesigns.dreamwidth.org/9202.html.

wow, thank you so much Stitchalong! This gives me a better idea of how it will look, but I was going to take it one step further and actually use 2 colors in the sashing. alternating yellow and green 2" x 2" (finished).
With the block being 12 1/2" I will need 3 "pieces" of each color.
The colors I am using are - beige and green scrappy for the actual log cabin block, then I have a nice bright yellow and sort of a pea green which I am thinking to use for the sashing blocks. Since I have a ton of the yellow and green for the sashing, I might just make up some and lay it beside it to see how those colors work.
But first I am making up all the blocks I can get out of the fabric I have to see just how big it would be without sashing.
I am aiming for a queen size at least
Thank you all for your suggestions! :)
