Log Cabin with cut logs

I have been looking for a pattern than that has the logs pre-cut rather than just adding the long strips. All I am finding online is the strip method. Any help from you log cabin pros? I made a LC using the strip method about 10 years ago and recall the ease at making wonky squares. :) Thank you.

Draw your block out on graph paper in real size. Then all you have to do is add 1/2 inch to each length and width of each strip. I agree that it is a more exact way of making the block. Also think about only finger pressing the seams until the whole block is finished. Pressing (too many of us iron) can distort the block.

Here are instructions from Quilter's Cache. LogCabinBlock.html Cut the logs exactly at the lengths suggested, no longer. It is much easier to get a perfectly shaped block this way than by using the long strip method.

loisf, I looked at the Quilters Cache pattern but dismissed it because all of the direction call for "about" measurements for the logs. Will give it a try. And I will do a search for my graph paper. I may have use it all up but then... maybe not.

There are also rulers you can buy with the various sizes marked for log cabins, too. The one I have is by Eleanor Burns, I think. It has two different widths marked for the logs as well.

Judy Martin’s Log Cabin books....I love making them with precut logs.

On page 4 of this link, the directions say to cut all your center squares, then it says to add to the first strip. When LG's are made this way, the center square and the first strip are sewn together, then they are cut through both pieces. The second paragraph of this instruction seems to say that but the first paragraph does not. ? ? ?

I have the log cabin die for the Go and it makes sewing the logs a breeze. I use Quilt in a Day log cabin ruler when I want bigger logs. EB has excellent instructions to use the ruler.
