I love the look of the traditional log cabin quilt, but would like to make one that is a little different. Maybe embellished with applique in the light areas or border, or maybe a slightly different overall look from different sized strips. I am looking for some recommendations on patterns or books that might have something other than the traditional look. Any suggestions?

Eleanor Burns has a log cabin book that the sashing between the blocks forms a star. It looks like a start at the corner of each block. It's very cute and I haven't made it yet!

I made that quilt and it is easy. The star is made in the sashing with squares attached at the ends and cut in half to make a star point.
I had fun making it and it is a beautiful quilt.

Judy Martin's "Log Cabin Quilt Book" has beautiful patterns that, as she says, aren't your mother's log cabin quilts. There are at least two pictures of quilts in the Picture section of two of Judy's patterns that members here have made.

Another book I like is Evelyn Sloppy's "Log Cabin Fever."

I love Judy Martin's Log Cabin Quilts book. I haven't seen Evelyn Sloppy's yet, but I have her 40 Fabulous Quick Cut Quilts and I love her directions. Great quilts too.

In Elenor burns book called ...Still stripping after 25 years.....there is a few different log cabin variations..but there is a pretty one that puts the log cabin blocks on point and then you applique a heart top on them..I made it went pretty fast. and it turned out very pretty.

I just looked thru many of the pictures that came up in my search. WOW! There sure are some incredible and different takes on the log cabin. I will be looking for the Judy Martin books next time I go to the quilt shop. I saw it on Amazon, but would like to browse first and see if one particular pattern jumps out at me. I thought somewhere I saw one with applique. I guess I should fish out my stack of magazines and look thru them again.

I absolutely love Judy Martin's log cabin book. And all her other books too.

You can certainly applique on a log cabin. I have a friend who designed her own applique and placed it on log cabin blocks that were made entirely from lighter fabrics. It was stunning. It would be a little harder to applique on top of the seams, though.

I have used the Eleanor Burns book on making the log cabin pattern. I thought it was easy to follow and I didn't use the stars that were used in her pattern,but I did use her method. I also bought a used book on Amozone.com Have Fun!

Judy Martin seems to be the "Queen" of the Log Cabin quilt. She has some great books. Check them out!!

In my lifetime I will never get to make all the wonderful Log Cabins that I have inspired me in these two books.

I have a book by Carol Anne Wien called The Great American Log Cabin Quilt Book. I picked it up at a flea market. I can try and scan some of the patterns and send them to you if you would like.

There is a book out there titled Not Your Grandmother's Log Cabin Quilts and it has some fabulous variations on the log cabin design/pattern. I would highly recommend it if you want something a little different.

Check out 'Log Cabin Quilts' by Rita Weiss & Linda Causee, it has a lot of variations. Another book 'Log Cabins for Everyone' by House of White Birches is interesting also, especially the pattern Log Cabin Twist.

I have the log cabin book by linda causee...it is a paper pieced book and I love it sooo much...easier to follow the pattern for them than traditional ways...just my opinion tho

It's a great book and some really unusual twists on the traditional. Plus, I love her construction method. I've made the Loveland one as a lappy and am now collecting FQs to make Snake River - and it's all Dunster's FAULT! :lol:

Thank you for all the suggestions! I will print up a list and check them all out when I go to the quilt shop. I did check at Joann's and they didn't have much. I like to look at the pics before I buy in case I prefer one over another. :)

DeLoa Jones has a book titled "Scraps organized to Perfection" in the book she has a Rose Log Cabin. She has good instructions on all of the patterns in the book.

I made both a log cabin and courthouse steps quilt some years ago that was really different using a technique called "Foldy Stuff". It is done on a foundation that has a grid hot iron transferred to it. The logs are cute wider, stitched along the first grid line then flipped to align with the next grid line. This makes the logs 3 dimensional.
Don't recall who was the designer but will try to find my original designs and post for anyone who might be interested.

I love the Quilt in A Day book on Log Cabins. It gives the basic blocks, alternative quilt sizes and layouts

I just watched El Burns video on Orions Star. It is a log cabin with a star in the middle.

I like the quilt in a day Courthouse Steps book. I love the different layouts you can get with the courthouse step block.

This sounds really cute...........I would love to have the pattern if you can find it.

It is called JAMAICA, and it is from Blanche Young's book"Traditions with a Twist"...Did more un-sewing on this than any other........36 different strip sets.....picture does not do the colors justice. They are all batiks, including the black......It really was a fun one to put together..........If you have not seen her book, and you like strip piecing, you should get it........colors they choose in the book are not the best to show off the designs, but the designs are really different and easy to do.

Shorebird, 36 strip sets sounds a bit complicated....lots of steps. I like strip piecing, but it's when you put strips in different orders and have to keep them all straight that I get a bit confused.

I have found (albeit over halfway thru and after MUCH frustration) that the medium binder clips with paper post-its to CLEARLY LABEL each strip set and keep them together/organized is what is needed. AND you need either a large design wall or somewhere big to lay this baby out....If I had known about the binder clips and labeling the strip sets without trying to pin them together and pin the paper label too ( OH BROTHER, what a PAIN that was) then this would have been much simpler............I would recommend you try it.........get her book and check out some of the other variations........really neat!

Sounds like I found another item for my wish list!
