log cabin quilt design question

1 Attachment(s)
i have 9" blocks, 1"logs.

it is pretty scrappy. i think in total there are about 24 fabrics in play, give or take.

i want to create a barn raising set.

so here's my question:

if half the logs have one fabric in the same position - the outermost strip (so the longest in the block) - will it stand out a whole lot when i put the quilt together?

i am pooped and i can't "see" it in my mind. i don't want to sew that pink polka dot on in the same spot as the other pink polka dot strip if it's going to look....weird or stand out or be really emphatic.

do you know what i mean? is this why people buy eq software?

can you help me get a sense of this?

for context, here's a shot of the first 20 blocks, just laid out so i can see them. the quilt will ultimately be 8 blocks by 10....so 40 blocks with this light pink polka dot in that pole position...

i think maybe i am freaking out about nothing and should just sew the darned strip on and let it go.

what do you think?

oh ha! there is only the very smallest example of the fabric in question in that picture. hilarious...

Well, how do you feel (when looking at the picture, not the actual quilt) when you see the very center of your quilt with the yellow striped fabric? It kind of jumps out from that picture, and it's in a "pole" position of sorts. Does it bother you?

If you have a few more blocks with the pink fabric in the pole position, lay them out, take a picture and look at it on a monitor. Or, go to a hardware store and buy a door peephole and look at your quilt through it. This will help you determine if your pink fabric always in that one spot will bother you.

Hope this helps! I'd mock it up in EQ for you, but I'm so tired right now it would take me an hour. I expect Jan or somebody might be along soon with an EQ picture....

I think it looks fine. When I want to get ideas of how things will look, I try searching in Google Images.

i don't see anything wrong with what you have laid out.

Sometimes we see things that other never see! Try using a mirror and looking at it through the reflection. Or walk away from it and view it from a distance. If one fabric 'stands out' and you don't like it then use less of it and bring in another bold color to replace it. You will ground your design with a border or two so the pink will fade into the over-all design.

Looks good to me.

Really confused. In the picture, you have the outer 5-6 strips the same in all blocks - but no pink polka dot. If that is one more strip you are going to sew on, I don't think it will change the feel much. Your layout already has the "pattern" that you are worried about, just in different fabrics. So if you like what's there now, continue happily. I think it looks great, personally.
