Going to start making my first Log Cabin quilt for a queen size bed. Do any of you have any suggestion for what size block I should go with? I will be paper piecing this. I have all winter! No hurry.....

Thanks sew much,

I'd probably go with a 12" - 14" finished block size for a first. You can make them any size you want to.

It's going to depend on the width of your 'logs',but i agree that 12-14 inches is a good size to work with. Not too unwieldy , but not so small that you loose the pattern.

depends on the size of strips you plan to use if very narrow (1" or less) a smaller-4"-6" block looks good- for wider strips 1 1/2"=2" larger 12-14" blocks look good.
it also of course depends on how many rounds you want to make-
it's a very personal choice
prehaps you should trace out 2 or 3 different sizes on paper- color them and see what you like best.
personally i would make BIG Blocks! just because after 4-6 of them i am so over it---
making 22 pineapple blocks was the most boring/tedious sewing i've ever tortured myself with- and i will probably never make another one- but they are beautiful! just OMG tedious! at least for me- some people like that type of sewing- some of us make one block and want to do something different---that would be me

It depends on what overall pattern you want to use. Smaller blocks will let you make more designs

On my first quilt I think my block was a 9.

Thank you all so much for the help. Seems like a 9 to 14" is what I should be going with here. I plan to use 1 1/2'' strips for the blocks. When finished I wanted to put a white ruffle around the quilt. I'm also going to make 2 pillow shams to match, but will be using a much smaller paper pieced block {4"} for those. They too will have a white ruffle around them.
I may use beige, depending on my color choices. That will be the hardest part for me!
