HI! I am going to make my first log cabin quilt. I am looking for a little advice. I have selected green and tan as the two primary colors. My question is...should each block be identical or can the colors be in different positions throughout the block? THANKS!!! Elli

i personally think it looks better if you vary the fabrics for every strip on all 4 sides of each individual square. have fun.

Make a few and see what you like best. Also you can do a search that the top of this page and see photos of lots of Log Cabin quilts and see which you like best. I like the scrappy look best:)

As long as the value is consistent, then I think it's a great look. As long as it doesn't mess with the pattern of dark/light.

Here are some examples:

Thank you! The pictures are incredibly helpful and I totally understand what you mean about value..... I want to have a red square as the center and that's part of what is throwing me.

If you have 12 green fabrics and 12 tan fabrics, then just go to town. Throw them in a bag, and just pick one out as you're sewing.

And they can all have red centers (the same or 12 different ones) if that's what you want. That's not a problem at all.

there are many logs under Pictures here on the board made by board members. If you want each block to be distinct, you probably need to keep greens on one side & tans on the other side of your center. Like center red, row 1 & 2 greens, rows 3 & 4 tans etc.

The best way to see a lot of log cabins from this board, is to click on HOME at the top of this page, then click on PICTURES, and then click on GALLERY, and scroll down till you see the title LOG CABIN and they are all right there. It is such a great place to look at all the different ways to put similiar blocks together. In fact, there is a green/tan one there. Good Luck with yours.
