Good evening!

I want to make a couple table runners for Christmas and found this wonderful log cabin variation on Flickr.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/31979142@N00/2159858390/

I contacted the user who posted the photo but she said she didn't have a pattern. Does anyone know where I could find a pattern for this? I'm a newer quilter and have not yet tried the log cabin block so I wouldn't be able to create my own pattern from experience.

Thanks in advance!
Cassandra

I think Eleanor Burns has a log cabin star pattern, that would be like that one. If you're not familiar with her, her patterns are usually well written and easy to understand for a newer quilter, as you have identified yourself.

Here's one. I know it's not what you are looking for

I think the stars are appliques on top of the log cabins - so do the basic blocks- the sides are half log cabins

What aspect of the runner you linked to do you like the most? Are you wanting to do a log cabin, or are you drawn to the stars, or the shape of the runner? I ask, because, to be honest, if you are a beginner, you might find that you enjoy the process and your end results more if you take on a simpler runner. That one is not terribly hard, but it's got a few challenging aspects to it, and unless you have an experienced quilter you can ask for help, you might possibly find yourself getting frustrated with it

I agree that it looks like it's based on the style of star log cabins that Eleanor Burns teaches. You can probably find her book in a larger library if it's not available in stores any more. She also has videos and PBS shows which you might be able to find online.

I don't think the stars are appliques. Though that would be one way to accomplish the look.

No the stars are not applique in the pattern link that WinterPromise has given.

WinterP ... it really isn't that hard a pattern if you're wanting to include the star along with the log cabin. And a good way to learn another technique along with doing the log cabin.

QuiltE - Would the Eleanor Burns pattern be in one of her books? I poked around on her website but didn't find much in the way of table runners. Unfortunately, my library doesn't carry any of her books! Maybe Joann Fabrics carries it?

Sharon b - I haven't tried appliqué yet. It looks intimidating!

RST - I like the log cabin blocks and the stars. I'm not as picky about the shape but I have the perfect fabric to do both the log cabin and the stars in the blocks. To be honest, if the pattern requires applique, I will have to find something else. I can only handle learning one or two new things per quilt! Do you have any suggestions on what variations would make this an easier runner?

btiny36 - Thanks for that website! I see a few things there that I want to try eventually.

Sorry, I'm not in the States, so not as familiar as to where to find her patterns. Do you have a LQS, that's where I'd try here.

You may not find that one as a table runner, as it will probably be shown as a quilt in Eleanor Burns' books. Think of it as being a very small quilt!

Here you be ... the quilt version of the runner

You could even call her store, and ask if by chance they have it as a table runner pattern. Good Luck!

Jelly Roll Quilts by Pam & Nicky Lintott also has a pattern for a quilt.
http://www.softexpressions.com/softw...ks/4K10461.php
It's called Log Cabin Hidden Stars and it's made with 2.5" strips.
Looks like the table runner is made with narrower strips.
You'd need to do a bit of math and cut it on point.

Method is similar to Eleanor Burns "Star Log Cabin"

The star is actually an Ohio stario combined in the sashing. It is an E. Burns pattern, and is fun to make. I have used that sashing on several of my log cabins lately.

I think this would actually work. You just turn the squares in a different direction plus make a few extra on the sides. At least you would have instructions for the stars, but it may be difficult for a beginner to make the adjustments as to where the star points would be placed.

I found the same free pattern (we all like that!!) .... good thing I read thru, and saw that PlainPat had posted it first.

Once we had the correct name, it googled right up pretty fast!

I don't know if you've located the pattern referenced in your link, and if you have great! I was looking around on eBay last night when I came across that pattern. I have included the link in this reply...just in case you are still searching!
