I am doing a purple Lone Star for my sister.. The star is finished and has 6 points.. It is 68 inches across... I do not have a pattern.. I just look at something online and can usually do a good imitation of it...My problem is the rest of the quilt... I do not know how to piece the rest of it  .. I have looked at it from different angles and I can not decide which is the best way to tackle it..

Any advice is appreciated... Next time I will stick with making the 12 inch star blocks

wow! i hope your sister has a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig bed.

fill the blank spaces with bigger diamonds and/or triangles

if you make big diamonds - the size of each of the diamond sets that make up the star, it'll turn into a gihumongous hexagon. you can build around that with triangles, more diamonds ... whatever strikes your fancy ... until it's squarish. then start your borders or companion blocks.

clear as mud?

I'm not sure I can explain how I would improvise a pattern, but I'll try, Tape together a few sheets of newspaper so you have lots bigger than you think you'll need. Do it straight, since this will be the ouside edge. Fold both the paper and quilt section in half, with straight edge outside, and folded edges matching. Draw line to match. that will be your sewing line. take fabric away, draw another line 1/4 out from the first, and cut.unfold and check for fit. There are probably formulas to determine it, but a lot of my quilting is improvised.

No... I have not posted a pic yet... I tried several things and finally gave up on using other solutions.. I finally cut out alot of diamonds and have been sewing them on at a few every day.. It will be California king size when done so it has been tedious..

I should have the top completed by this weekend.. I will post it before it goes to the quilters and then a pic when it comes back...
