Does anyone know where I can find a free, easy Lone Star pattern online. I am a beginner quilter and just love the looks of these. Thanks so much.

This is a search on the QB. Maybe there will be something you are interested here:) http://www.quiltingboard.com/search....0&s=5&s=10&s=4

Check in our own tutorial section of the QB. I recall a couple being posted there.

I have an Evening Star pattern it isn't free but super simple. No diamonds and no "Y" seams. But looks like it does. It is by Calico Carriage. www.calicocarriage.com

Check out Jan Krentz site. She has lone star patterns. Start with her lesson on Quick LemOyne Star Quilt. Then after you master that, since you said were a beginner, then go for the more difficult pattern. I made my lone star quilt using her technique and it turned out wonderful.

As a beginner I would start with something less challenging, lonestars tend to be difficult. I tried doing one from a kit as my very first project, boy what a mistake. I finally hauled it out(after many years) and a lady who has make several lonestars is helping me to revamp it as I had to make changes to it. Just some friendly advise, please don't take it the wrong way.

Get a paper piecing pattern for the lone star quilt.

This is not a quilt for a beginner to tackle.

Judygod 04-22-2011 11:37 AM

Thank you to all for the great suggestions!

ladyinred 04-22-2011 11:53 AM

I would not recommand to start with a lone star when you are a beginner. I made my very first lone star when I was quilting about one year (also still a beginner) and it was very difficult, because there are different ways to make them.

Now, I have more quilting experience and I made more lone stars and I also teach how to make them. There is a tutorial here on the quilting board in the tutorial section.

It's just a friendly advise, please don't take it the wrong way.

Quiltsmart has a pattern that makes it easy and accurate (also very heavy) and beautiful.

QuilterMomma 04-22-2011 03:41 PM

I just remembered. There is printed interfacing. You have to see if your quilt stor carries it. I do know that A Heart Like Yours in Spokane Washington carries it. There was some classes for the stuff and they turned out nice. Comments I heard were that they could actually make the lone star. You could always check that out.

This was my second quilt..I used the quilt smart pattern and found it was easy once I figured it out...(which was when the quilt was almost finished...lol) but I wanted to give my sister something special for taking such great care of my mom...it's by no means perfect but she loved it....

The angles, the bias edges, not something for a beginner to start with

ann31039 04-22-2011 07:26 PM

check out kaye woods. she has a pretty simple way of doing it and she also has the printed interfacing kit on her website.

Fons and Porter did a 2 part show on Lonestar. Much simpler construction that some patterns call for.

See if this link helps you.

There also is a way to make them using hsts. I havent found a pattern yet, Ive been wanting to make one too.

KarenBarnes 04-23-2011 08:34 PM

It isn't a quilt for a beginner but there's not much better quilt to teach about bias, angles and the like! It was my first quilt with the exception of squares and boy I learned a lot! It took me about a year and a half to make it (hand quilted) and I turned out awesome! My sister still uses it and loves it. I suggest strongly getting a mentor if you as a beginner are going to do this.

I would watch Sharon Schamber's video's on You-tube for how to do the Y seams. She shows it in a way everybody can understand and do.And it's easy, and very accurate. And Lea Day on U-tube started out with a non beginner quilt, and won ribbons at the fair. So,it really depends on how you've done your homework. If you've studied a lot, sewed before, and learned from books and videos, then you most certainly could take it on.But if you haven't the foggiest notion of anything about quilting,or no sewing experience at all, then no.Not for that type of beginner. You'll only end up frustrated and aggravated and throw the towel in,when if you do an easier one, even start out on pot holders, then place mats, then lap quilt, then one for your bed.And 'finish' every one before starting the next one 'You'll enjoy it so much more and will love it.It gets addictive. And come back with any and all questions as there is a wealth of knowledge here on the board and they are always ready and willing to help anybody starting out,Intermediate,or a pro even sometimes needs help too.We all need help at some point. And there are no silly questions, only questions that have an answer.Good luck

Colonial Patterns has Lone Star & Broken Star kits that are very reasonably priced ($25.50 - $28.00). They are only the pre-cut diamonds. You would need to supply the set-in fabric. Granted, the fabric used for the diamonds is poly/cotton blend. The point is these kits are great to learn on and you don't have all the cutting to do.

The trick to the Lone Star is extremely accurate piecing. If you decide to make one, take your time making it.

Sorry I can't help you with a free pattern but I did want to encourage you to give it a shot. My Lonestar quilt was my second or third quilt. Granted, I'd sewn for years, just not quilted so maybe that helped. I found the pattern in a book at my local library. Sorry, can't remember the name of the book either. It was done in strips and was actually fairly easy. Y-Seams notwithstanding. If you don't mind a seam down the middle of your plain corner, I have directions from my LQS BOM from last year showing that technique. PM me if you're interested. I'd go for it since you really like the pattern. I believe in making what you like. When I first started knitting decades ago I saw a sweater pattern that I loved, bought all the yarn. When I opened the pattern is when I saw 'for experienced knitters only'. I ended up re-writing the instructions in terms I knew and it worked out fine. Go for your lonestar - you won't regret it.

Good luck! There is always someone on this board to help you if you run into problems.
I'm excited for you!
