Before I load my quilts I lay the backing fabric in half and then lay the quilt top in half on top of the backing fabric. Then mark with pins on how to load it on the frame. This also helps to see if the backing and top are truely square and to adjust them if they are not, most backings and tops are not square.
I'd take the others advice and unload it and sew onto the bottom edge. I also like the look of pieced backings. |
It could even be both things - the customer cut it wrong and it was loaded wrong.
The additional steps of measuring the top, batting, and bottom before loading - even though it seems it should not be necessary - and marking "Up and down" - seem to be well worth the effort. From what I've read, not all customers prepare their backings as directed. |
I would just as soon skip some learning experiences.

It looks like we have all done this. Just take it off and add more. Don't stress, it will work out.

Thanks for all the good advice and best wishes. She is bringing me extra fabric to sew on the back. I use Red Snappers so taking it off the frame and putting it back on should be easy. I will be measureing and marking the tops of the back and the quilt very carefully in the future.

As someone here said once, "shift happens". Sorry this hassle has happened but it looks like you've got a fix for it.
