Anyway we found a turnk and it was full of real old clothing and 2 old hand pieced quilt tops, and some that were not all done yet, she didn't know where they can from and asked me if I wanted all of them.. WOW! I jumped at that. LOL... I took them home and washed then and they look really nice. one has a small stain on it but it is in a place that would not show. What I want to know is can a LAQ quilt these tops seeing there are hand pieced? I don't know how to hand quilt so that is out.. what would you do with them? |

How fortunate you are!! Those are beauties....and I would ask someone to handquilt them....they are very special!! Thanks for sharing.

I think you can find a hand quilting group that would love to do these quilts. Search Amish quilters or hand quilters in your area. In Illinois it shouldn't be to hard to find them and you will find a wealth of info. Just don't go by the cheapest quoted price. You get what you pay for in hand quilting. They are wonderful quilts. Love red and white!

Very nice.
Just a thought but maybe you could find someone in the Amish area that would hand quilt it for you. In Michigan when I worked in an area of Amish they were charging such a small amt. by the spool of thread but at that time I didn't quilt..... |
If you live in an area near the Amish check with them to see if they would be willing to quilt it for you.

Nice find! They are beautiful.

Wow! Get them to the long armer so you can enjoy them.

wow you are so lucky.Try some fels naphta soap on the stain. I just got a quilt at a yard sale this weekend and it had a very dark water stain on it. Washed it in very hot water with some oxyclean and rubbed some fels naphta soap directly on the stain. It is virtually gone now.

Lucky you.

Let the machine quilter do the shoofly quilt, but find someone to hand quilt the red and white one, as it is probably older, and very unique. Or...learn to hand quilt with a hoop and do it yourself. It is not hard, and is a nice winter project you can do while watching tv or listening to a recorded book.

Maybe I have seen the Antiques Road Show too often, but I think I would have them appraised before I turned anyone loose on them. Especially if you think they are really old. They are so beautiful.

Holey Moley, can't believe that your friend didn't want them. Do you have any vintage clothing shops around you? There are shops that sell vintage clothes. If she didn't want to do that maybe cut them for quilts. What a find! Lucky ladies. You for getting them from her and her for having a good friend to help her. As others have said I think that you should take them to someone that can date them for you. Good luck in whatever you do. BrendaK

Beautiful! I would definitely hand quilted them or find someone that would. It would be a pity to machine quilt heirlooms like that. Just my opinion!

I love attics!, Wish I had one.

Yes, I do. It's called beautiful. Great find.

LUCKY YOU!!!!

With older quilts and old threads you need to be care when stretching on a longarm frame. If you have a LAQ quilt them they might have you apply thin muslin behind the top so as to not pull the seams too much on the sewing table.
I'm in agreement with many here that the quilts would look lovely if hand quilted. |
Better tha gold anytime.

It looks like the maker's own interpretation of this feathered star pattern.
This is the closest pattern that I've found, but it looks like the maker re-oriented two of the blocks above the four small squares to make a "heart" shape and replaced the diamonds at the tips with HST's. Feathered Star |
yes thepolyparrot....
it does look some what like that block ...the person might have made up the block , I think it is pretty, they also put HST all around the edge...I just wish I knew who made it, very nice work, I wish I could take a picture of the perfect 1/4 inch seams but they don't show up when I take a picture with my camera, it is not a very good one... LOL maybe my friend has a better one that would take close up pictures so everyone could see the stitching...Thanks |
What beautiful treasures!
