Looking for advice on a pattern
Hello all, I have a book called Heartland Quilts by Lila Lee Jones and she has a quilt called Missouri Daisy. I love this quilt. The book has the pattern pieces, but my question to you all is, is there a better way to make this quilt than to sew it by hand, which is the way she has it written. The pieces are curved and I am not a skilled hand piecer.
If you are unfamiliar with this quilt go to www.quiltindex.org and if you select listing the quilts A-Z it is the 9th one down. (Sorry I couldn't get a link to work) Has anyone ever made this quilt and can give me some pointers or the best way to go about making it? I would so appreciate any advice. Thanks, Gina |

Did a google search and found a bunch of pictures...

After looking at a few pictures of that quilt, I suspect there is, in fact, no curved piecing. I think the curved part is an appliquéd circle.

The little blades that are between the bigger blades with the pointed ends have curved pieces. I know, cuz I already tried to piece them. That's how I know how much of a pain they will be. Thanks for looking.

Hmmm, I would have agreed with Peckish - that were was no curved piecing, and that the petals and circle were appliqued on after.
But it seems these are the templates for the block as originally designed. http://ozarkcastle.blogspot.com/2012...uri-daisy.html Personally, I'd prefer to make a LeMoyne Star block, and then machine (or hand) applique the petals and centers on top of the star. Much faster. Better control. All done via machine. Still a great looking block. Unless I was trying to channel my inner Jinny Beyer and give myself a hand-piecing challenge. But the chances of that happening are, like, nil. Thanks for bringing the block to my attention - it's not one I'd seen before. |

I would fuse the inner petals to a finished star block. |

So I went back and looked at a bunch of the other quilts. After seeing the templates, and how the petals would get pleated to fit the space, I can see how it would be pieced. (I originally thought that was a shadow in the picture). Those would be some pretty nifty y-seams in that block - if it were hand pieced. Still, I think I'd opt for the machine applique - with the pleated petals. I like how it adds texture and dimension to the block. |
Thank you all for your replies and great ideas. I will give them a try and let you know how it all works out. I really want to make this one. :)
