Looking for advice/suggestions

about to put a plain dark blue border around this quilt and thinking about those empty white spaces. Cannot decide on what to fill them with anyone got any thoughts?

SulaBug 12-01-2014 01:15 AM

Your quilt top is very pretty with your blue & yellow colors. As I look at it, I am wondering if you have an embroidery machine & could embroider a pretty flower of some kind on the white areas? Or maybe you could add a cluster of Yo-Yo's above the fans. Just a thought on my part. Good Luck deciding on what you will do!!
:D :D :D :D

Thanks Sula. Machine is not an embroidery type, however I am more than happy to get to it with hand sewing, so I will see what templates for flowers I can lay my mitts on. I appreciate your suggestions.

Why fill the spaces? Its beautiful as is and the blues pop.

coffeecozy 12-01-2014 03:36 AM

I think it looks beautiful just as it is. When it is time to quilt it those spaces will be a great space to add texture.

Gayle Stojack 12-01-2014 03:40 AM

I would add yellow in the border possibly:thumbup:

I'm another one who votes for nothing but some fancy quilting in those white spaces. Also, did you mean binding or border in blue? Dark binding would look very nice but if you mean borders I would put a narrow yellow, a narrow blue and a wide white, followed by blue binding. Just my thought on it.

I say it's a great area to show off your quilting. Beautiful quilt as well.

Echo quiltinf around the fans.

Quiltngolfer 12-01-2014 05:15 AM

I wouldn't add anything except quilting in those spaces. That pattern looks awesome with beautiful quilting in the white spaces. Your quilt is very pretty.

Jackie Spencer 12-01-2014 05:37 AM

I would use the white space for some beautiful quilting motifs!!

I think it is a beautiful quilt as is. You may like some special quilting in the white spaces. It is amazing what quilting patterns can add to the spaces. Good luck on your decision.

How about echoing about a quarter inch away from the zig zaggy lines of the dresden blades. Then echo again a half to three quarters of an inch away and fill that area in with circles or pebbles. Kind of a addaptation of this from sewkindofwonderful http://sewkindofwonderful.com/blogs/...-chevron-quilt. Then you could do more echo quilting or whatever. I bet ideas would start flowing. I'm doing this on a quilt right now and really like how it's working out. It isn't too difficult on a smaller quilt. Yours may be harder since it looks pretty big. Also, a pale yellow thread would be pretty agains the white, I think. It's a lovely quilt. Hope you have fun quilting it!

Thanks everyone for the input - Wishful, I appreciate that link which looks really good. The quilt isn't that big it is a lap size so I think I might give this a go.

ManiacQuilter2 12-01-2014 03:54 PM

Just depends on the batting you used and what you are comfortable in quilting. I would go with an accent yellow inside border and then the blue on the outside. Blue and Yellow alwasy makes such a happy quilt.

Glad you liked the link. Do show a pic of how it's coming along. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

My mom hand quilted all her quilts and when she did the fan quilts (and she did many of them), she had a pretty rose with a leaf on each side that she quilted in the white spaces--very pretty!

barny 12-01-2014 06:31 PM

It is pretty as is, with just quilting in the white areas would be beautiful. If you put something of color, it might be too busy. I love it.

MaryKatherine 12-02-2014 03:36 AM

Quilting!!! Grand quilting!

paoberle 12-02-2014 03:50 AM

Do some dense or fancy quilting.

Madan49 12-02-2014 04:49 AM

Personally, I LIKE the white space! I wouldn't fill it with anything but some glorious quilting!!

carolynjo 12-02-2014 09:12 AM

Ditto on just adding pretty quilting in the corners. Flowers in different sizes, from small to the largest in the largest space and then shrinking back down would fill the space and if it were me, I would quilt it in white. It is so pretty and "crisp" as is.

I agree with Jackie about the quilting.

What about using several of the blues to echo the fans, instead of just one in the border, since there is a lot of white and it might be too much contrast going from the white to a dark blue. The other option is the gold color for a border and then bind it in dark blue.

donna13350 12-02-2014 02:22 PM

I would just mirror the fans with quilting when I quilted it. Beautiful so far!

MadQuilter 12-02-2014 02:30 PM

What a great space for some custom quilting. Anything else would distract.

debbieoh 12-06-2014 05:44 AM

I love the quilt the way it is. the white makes the blues and yellow pop. would love to see it with the border. Think that willk realy be all it needs

nunnyJo 12-06-2014 05:56 AM

nice as is, just quilt it?

tessagin 12-06-2014 06:11 AM

I would quilt it with colors of your fabric, Blue or Yellow and you could alternate the borders blue or yellow, Either would make it nothing but the happiest of quilts. Anxious to see finished photos.

cheryl222 12-06-2014 06:22 AM

I also agree that is is beautiful the way it is. Adding embroidery would make it too busy. I would add a narrow border of yellow and wider of blue.
