looking for alphabet cutouts

I want to make an "our family" quilt using mom, dad, all our children's and grandchildren's name in a scrabble look quilt top. I have been searching the internet for 3 inch alphabet letters, either pre-cuts or stencils. Pre-cuts or embroidered letters are very expensive as I need 62 letters. I can't seem to find a free alphabet cut out. I could cut the letters out and sew them on each block and then put them in the order I have on paper. Does anyone have any quick references to something free for alphabet stencils? Or does anyone have a recommendation where I could get pre-cut fabric letters I could sew on?

I picked a set up at my local grocery store when it was going out of business. I would check online with Walmart and have them ship to the nearest store to you. Most large office supply stores should carry them too.

My sis bought some packaged ones at WM....not sure of the size or price.
They were iron on but I think she sewed around them after they were fused.
If you want extra information,PM me.

I use my computer to print out letter templates. Just find a font in your word processing program that look right and adjust the size to what you need. Then print and cut.

What PatPitter said. Just pick a simple font, then enlarge it as much as you need by choosing a large font size. You can do this in a draw, paint, or word processing application. If the app doesn't let you get it big enough, print it out at the maximum size you want and enlarge it on a copier. Even here!

I got a big package of letter and number stencils(actually stick-on) goodies at one of the dollar stores. Used them on my avatar for door curtain.

I bought an alphabet applique book couple of years back at a quilt show but i can remember the name of it and I am at the office so can't check, but here are a few at Amazon only with alphabets and you can use in the future too.

Good luck. Neat idea that you are doing ;-)

I have the alphabet 3" letter Die for the Go. It has become a time saver die to have. I found it on clearance last year at 75% off a store closing. A friend made a scrabble quilt with her family names and bought the letters custom cut on Ebay or Etsy, can't remember. It was a lot easier then doing them herself.

KalamaQuilts 10-30-2014 11:16 AM

go to your word processor and look at your various fonts. Any letter you can increase in size in any font can be used for a cutout pattern.

Cheshirecatquilter 10-30-2014 02:08 PM

You could pick up some kids' magnetic letters and xerox them and enlarge them to any size you want, then use those as templates to make your own letters.

I use the font 'Century Gothic' on my computer and then choose 'outline' option and 'bold'. This gives me a clear outline to draw round. When I print the name, I use the 'Mirror' function on my printer, so the name is printed in reverse all ready to draw (without holding it up to the window, lol). The font size is usually 200+ depending on how big I want it and I usually have the paper orientation in 'Landscape'. Good luck!

This one is in upper case, but you could do lower, or a mixture.

Knitette 10-30-2014 11:35 PM

Oops - just noticed you already got help! :o

Go to a school supply store and buy alphabet stencils like teachers use for bulletin boards. You can find all sizes an styles and use them for tracing your letters on fabric..

quiltingbuddy 11-01-2014 04:04 AM

Just wondering what you ended up getting and from where? Be sure to post pic when it's finished ok?

Btw, very cute Knitette!

craftygater 11-01-2014 05:06 AM

When I need a font for print out or for computer I google free fonts. You will find thousands. Just look for one you like and download. Install on computer and print any size you want.

Mommomjoann 11-01-2014 05:23 AM

I got mine at CVS in the stationary dept.

KyKaren1949 11-01-2014 06:14 AM

You can get letter patterns at any teacher store. Sometimes Wal-Mart carries them as well. I ironed my stabilizer on the back of the material, then traced the letters in reverse because when you apply them, they'll have to be facing the right direction.

tessagin 11-01-2014 06:20 AM

Realize you already have what you need but craftygater's idea is how I do it. Have also gone to office supply stores.

A teacher supply store might be a good place to look....on line if there isn't one in your area.

Well, you are a wonderful "computer-enabled geekette"! I got all the way to "format options" looking for the outline option and can't find that in MS Word. It's the only program I know a little about. I'm hoping that's where the font "outline" change is located. Heaven help me if you say go to PowerPoint or somewhere else! Can you give me further directions please?

This is what my page looks like - the 'outline' is pictured in blue 'A', to the left of the A underlined in red. Hope this helps!

I have gotten several sets of letters from the DOLLAR TREE....one dollar and have a cardboard collection for future use over and over

maggie_1936 11-01-2014 10:16 AM

kamaiarigby 11-01-2014 11:07 AM

do you know of any one with a Brother Scan-N-Cut? i have just bought one and first on my list was to cut the alphabet for a I spy quilt, was delighted how easy this was done

busy fingers 11-01-2014 11:53 AM

Thanks alikigirl for that link. I am in the process of making a santa sack and needed letters for my granddaughter's name.

Rose Bagwell 11-01-2014 02:08 PM

Go to Bobby Socks Quilt Co. They have a lot of embroidery stuff but if you enter applique in search bar I believe you will find what you are looking for. Hope this helps.

I am working on Xmas quilts for grandkids & found a complete set of alphabet. Letters and numbers on the McCall website for free, they were 3" featured in their 2012 magazine quick quilts, July issue, was for a football quilt , try their website

Sending you a PM.

Some of the local libraries have a die cut machine. Just ask to use it or check it out, if allowed. Use cardstock to make the letters so you can reuse a number of times.

DonnaFreak 11-02-2014 02:26 PM

I've done a few quilts with letters on them, and have never once done anything but draw out the letters I wanted by hand. It's easy to do, I can make them any size I want them, and have never had any complaints. :)

free 3" alphabet letters & #'s

didn't
think I knew how to do this, fooled myself. lol

dsch 02-28-2015 04:26 PM

Or go to your local schools to see if they will let you use their letters and their die-cut machine. Put the cardstock & fabric under the wooden block. Yes, it DOES work with fabric. Some old hand-operated inventions still work well today. :)

We have to keep the house numbers on the curb for the local fire department. We got the whole set of numbers and letters at the local hardware store, I think True Value. It is the stencil kind. We taped some of them together to make our house number and then he spray paints them when it starts to fade on the concrete curbs. You could do that and then just use fabric paint which would be easier for you then applique. I think A.C. Moore and Michaels have them too in all sizes. Good luck.

I did what PatPitter suggested for a Guiding quilt for my daughter (shes in training to be a Guide Leader) as I wanted to include the Guide Promise, printed it out, traced it onto the fabric and hand embroidered it on, I am delighted with the outcome.
