Looking for baby quilt ideas............
I will become a great grandma in July. My granddaughter and her husband have chosen not to know the baby's sex before birth. The baby shower will be in 6 weeks. Don't want to make anything girlie but other colors and patterns seem plain or masculine in case of a boy. Any ideas on colors and pattern? MANY THANKS!

There are many adorable panels in primary colors- alphabet themed, numbers, book characters, animals, and this extends the use well into the toddler and young child stages. I'm making Eric Carle's Hungry Caterpillar fabrics into a quilt for my granddaughter due in September, and including the book with it. Also an Alphabet quilt, a cute zoo animals one and some fabric books- I'm a teacher and school librarian, I have so many projects for this baby!

I am also doing a Hungry Caterpillar quilt for my niece's baby. She, like your granddaughter and her husband, has chosen not to learn the gender of her baby before birth. My quilt is turning out really well and was simple to make!

The chevron quilts are gender neutral. Stars and pinwheels are good also. How about an I Spy quilt?
|
I'm rather partial to "I Spy" quilts. My favorite are the hexagon style with the triangles between them, but also do the patchwork. There is a book called "P.S. I Love You" which is full of baby quilt ideas. Actually there is about 3 different P.S. I Love You books. Mine was in the first book.

Congratulations on becoming a great grandma. What a blessing in your life.
I am doing a quilt from a Jenny Doan tutorial at MSQC. It is the Binding Tool Star Quilt. It is made from a jelly roll (or can cut your own) and a yard of background fabric and the binding tool. It goes together very quickly, easily and looks like you spent a lot of time making it when you didn't. Since it only makes about a 32 inch or so quilt as is, I am adding some additional borders and it looks so cute. So you can make it crib size or a throw size. Good Luck with whatever you choose and ENJOY THAT NEW ADDITION TO YOUR FAMILY!!!! |
I'm working on a plan to use simple nine patch or jelly roll with an applique from some of the giant coloring books I have collected. I posted one I made that was a large star formed with hst's made from 12" squares...Fast and cute made from cute prints and coordinates.

You can always wait and make the quilt after the baby is born.

Baby Quilt

Here is one that I am currently working on. I am hand quilting around all the letters. The original panel came from Ethelbird but I cut it apart and added to it to make it my own. I used all bright colors and tried to keep it gender friendly. Hope this helps.

So many great suggestion. Has the mother chosen a color theme?? There have been some cute animal baby quilts posted here. Do a Google search of baby quilts and check out the photos. That is where I get some inspiration from.

Congratulations on being a GG! We threatened my DIL that if she didn't tell us (her Mother and I), we would storm her house and find the envelope that has the info. of what she's having. My DIL said she didn't doubt us for a second. ;) She had a fun reveal party...we had a blast and are expecting a baby girl in August. Perhaps you can entice your GD into having a reveal party since most women are always up for a party! A party might be more attractive to her than being secretive.
I can't fathom why some choose "gender neutral" for a nursery BUT that opinion IS coming from "old school" and had no other choice kind of person. Here's what I made when faced with a gender neutral baby quilt a while back. I didn't use a pattern, I just cut as I went, adding wherever I liked and quilted whatever I felt like ...out of "gender neutral" constraint frustration. |
That pinwheel one is just adorable.
|
sorry, my computer just wouldn't type worth beans last nite. for the pinwheels, I think I started with a 6.5 inch square, and sewed all around it, then made the pinwheels from it. they end up being quite big. like 45 x 60. grandkids are the envy of pre school at nap time....

Quilting Haven, this is one of the cutest baby quilts I've seen. I especially like how you used primary colors and the alphabet pieces with animals. Definitely something a baby will grow into and learn from. Just love this! I'm going to look for this panel. Thank you for sharing.

I am getting ready to make a Dimensional Pinwheel" for the baby of a friend. Not locked into colors with them.

There is a really cute animal baby quilt now showing on pictures section now. Animals are neutral and panels by Suzy, I think it is, have some cute bee ones, lambs and sheep, etc.
|
Take a look at that peek-a-boo baby quilt, saw it on here the other day in pic section. Think it was posted a few years back, and someone commented on it and brought it back up. Anyway, you put squares of interesting fabrics like with animals etc on it, then put little flaps like prairie points that the baby can open to see! Really cute and would be great for a girl or a boy, just bright and contrast like black and white.

This is my current favorite baby quilt and can be done in a more gender nutural colors.

Can you find out how they are decorating the nursery? I would go with whatever their plan is, I'm sure they have one. My daughter and her husband did not want to know the gender of their three kids and picked such a cute nursery theme. They used it for the first two, a boy and then a girl. Dad even painted a mural on the wall. It was Carter's John Lennon line called Imagine. So cute. I wasn't quilting at the time, so didn't add to the theme that way. For the third one, a little girl, they were in a new house and didn't really worry about a theme. I did make a quilt for her but waited until I knew who she was:) Since then I also made a quilt for her big girl bed. Such fun.

I like rail fence, log cabin and any type of star quilts for babies and color really doesn't matter, but shades of green are very popular with either sex. When my niece had her second girl, she wanted sage green. That works so well with a boy.
When my DD was pregnant with our grandson, she didn't want anything with a babyish look, so I used all homespun fabric and plaids with a couple of neutrals and used stars. It definitely had nothing to do with a baby, except for the size, but it was more masculine. It could have changed the fabrics and made it gender neutral or feminine. This is another I've made that I think makes a great one for scrap fabrics, but could use any fabric group for any baby. Never mind, it appears that it doesn't want to show my photo, but if anyone wanted to click on the site under my signature, it will show my photos of my quilts and it's one of them there. |
Easy and Fast baby quilt
With a baby shower in 6 weeks, this quilt is super fast, especially if you use the charm packs! I have this pattern on my bucket list.

I love the pinwheel pattern and also the alphabet one.

Colors: greens and yellows Theme: animals(pets or zoo) Nursery rhymes in red work are cute for any sex

Why the rush?? If this is your first GGC, I would wait and see what it is, and then make something fabulous!! How many firsts will get you?
|
Sewnso, love, love, love your baby quilts! They are adorable!
|
Congratulations on the newest addition to your family! My son and daughter-in-law also chose to be surprised at birth. She did have a color theme though. I made them a Yellow Brick Road crib quilt in the colors, teal, yellow and gray. I was quite pleased with the finished quilt, and so were they! For the backing I used fabric with kittens on it, as they love cats!

There is a baby quilt I always make for my family living in the lower 50. I make a North American animal paper piece work quilt, usually 8 - 12 alternating 7" blocks then add borders and binding. I quilt the American flag on it. It is Always a favorite of the receiver. Just a suggestion.
|
I made one in a soft greenish teal and beige... its adorable and gender neutral
|
I am finishing up a baby quilt for a great-nephew due in May. I wasn't having much luck finding boy prints that went with the nursery colors of baby blue and cream, so I went with solids. I found many shades of blue Kona and Moda Bella FQ online and cut 60degree triangles. It would have been a fast quilt if I had machine quilted it, but I decided to hand quilt it. I think it is my favorite baby quilt.

Love all the baby quilts being shown. great ideas.

My niece and her DH decided not to find our the gender of their baby. She also wasn't helpful about deciding on a nursery theme. She did finally say that they liked animals, particularly the jungle animals they saw on their honeymoon in Costa Rica, and "bright colors" would be good. I had a yard of this Moda "Silly Safari" jungle print in my stash and just alternated 6" plain blocks with pinwheels in rainbow colors. The back is a soft green flannel with jungle animals and rainbows, and it was quilted with a jungle animal panto that my LAQ had. They loved it and it gets used a lot!
