Looking for cutting technique
 

I recently saw a video and now I can't find it about a technique where you layer dark and light squares (4 or more) of fabric then cut them and take one piece from the bottom and move it to the top to get variation in the pattern. I don't feel like I'm doing a very good job explaining but hoping someone will know what I'm talking about. The person who demonstrated it had a book or patterns about it. It had a specific name to the process. It is not stack and whack.

The quilt that is on the left I did that with.

I cut the block stack diagonally, then took from the bottom and put it on the top. Sewed the strip in.
Turned the block, cut, pulled from the bottom and put the strip/sewed.

I continued that for 3 turns...at least I think that was how many.

For the Crazy 9 patch pattern, you take 9 different fabric squares and stack them. I use 12.5 inch and cut out a square. Then you make 2 cuts vertical and 2 cuts horizontal. Make them at angles not parallel. Separate the colums of cuts slightly. Upper left is 1, then 2 then 3. Second row is 4, 5, and 6. Bottom row is 7, 8, and 9. Leave 1 stack as is. The number 2 stack take the number one and put it on the bottom so that the number 2 fabric is on top.. Number 3 stack take numbers one and 2 and put on the bottom and so forth. When you sew them together, you have no two fabrics alike, The only thing you have to watch out for is when you sew them together not getting them out of order or turning them. It is also helpful to not make too small a shape on the outside.

Is it "Stack the Deck" by Karla Alexander? I saw it originally on "Simply Quilts" many years ago, so not sure if there is a YouTube video. But you stack at 6 pieces of fabric - then make cuts so you have six pieces. Then one stack you move one down, the next stack 2 down, the next stack 3 down, etc. Then you have all different pieces. How ever many you have in the stack is how many pieces you need to cut. Sew them together, then square them to the size. The book has several variations of it - I really like the hearts she centered on them. (It's still on my to-do list.)

The quilters on this site are just the best. I can't remember how I found this site some years ago but I'm sure glad I did. It's how I start my day.

I also looked at Stack the Deck by Karla Alexander. Thanks quiltingcandy. Has anyone done these or have the book? Looks like an interesting process but I would like a little more information before I buy one of the books.

I looked for the Magic Tiles one mentioned by grma33 and could find images and a place that sold the pattern wholesale but no retail outlet for that pattern. There were some eHow instructions but would have to study those with the images I found to figure it out. Has anyone done this one?

The OP was looking for cutting techniques.
The only advice I can give is: when you start cutting into a stack of fabric, do not put your cutter into the stack from the end. If the stack is of many layers, it just bunches up. Set your cutter into the fabric a couple of inches from the end, then pull it back, cutting, toward yourself. They reset the cutter and continue the cut away from yourself.
It helps to have a really sharp blade, too.

Slash and Stack is also what I know this block as being named.

I think McDugan is right; I just saw that the other day too. Neat idea. Does anyone else ever wonder "Why didn't I think of that"? I do all the time.

I just ordered the book 1 and 2 from Amazon because I work best from having that as a reference but the video is really good also.

There is also a Buggy Barn pattern. I think it is Buggy Stars or Crazy Stars. I did 1 of these for Blue Star Moms 1 yr.
It was fun & looked quite nice.
