Could they do something along these lines? Big stitches wouldn't matter too much for a simple pillowcase.

I have made quilt blocks with students in my classroom, age 10-11. I have squares precut backed with freezer paper. I have students do tesselations on the blocks. I then use an old towel or paper towels to iron the wax out of the blocks. You need to make sure you cover the iron so it doesn't ruin. Kids love it!

I like the idea of heat setting crayons for a quilt. :)

Yes I cut the pattern out of felt using blue felt for body yellow for feet and pink for flower, then I let them glue the the feet to the back and lay the front piece on top. Glue all around except for small opening to stuff in. This way you have no turning. I also used black & white felt for eyes. They turned out great.

I went to the nick jr web site and printed off the pattern.

I recently did a baby quilt that I colored center blocks with a cowboy in each block. Go to Cowboy quilt under my name and view that one. I have not posted my states quilts yet. I highly recommend that should you use this and if anyone colors their blocks using any color very dark, that you heat set that portion of the block before any other color is put on the block, sometimes the colors tend to run when the colors are done like that, but the runs can be coverd up with another dark color. By dark I don't mean blue or black perse, but any color that is colored darkly. Ask me how I know. I love doing crayons on quilts. I just outlined very lightly with a sharp pencil my design and went from there.
Setting the colors is easy but needs to be done by an adult. I think Crafty Bear posted a site to explain that part.

Maybe get some cheap fleece or batting and make "blankies" for shelter animals? Kids love to help out homeless animals.

If you let the kids color their blocks, make sure they know about the seam allowance so the design doesn't get lost in the edge when you sew them together...I know this from experience!!

That sounds like it has potential, but do you have more a more detailed idea than just having children cut out small blankets? I am a whole lot less creative than the organizer of this event seems to think! :?
