I was in a quilt shop and saw a quilt with large leaves done in batiks. It was beautiful. It was simply done in blocks. The background was black. I thought it was needle turn applique but looked closer and found it was shadow applique(not sure that is the name). Applique where you put background material on top and your leaf material on back. Draw pattern on top, stitch around it and then cut the background away leaving the bottom material showing. Hope this makes sense. I would rather do it in needle turn. I thought maybe I could find a pattern online for it but haven't. I thought it was Connecting Threads but looked and couldn't find the pattern. Where is the best place to buy batiks of good quality online? I anyone knows of this pattern please post.

You could just Google images of leaves and use those.

sounds like reverse applique. when i made my fall leaf quilt i went for a walk in the woods and collected wonderful, beautiful leaves of all sorts. took them home and pressed them in a book. then used them to trace onto fusable and cut them out of batiks. if you want to needle turn that's simple too, trace the leaves, add a little turn under allowance and cut them out. I would trace them on the fabric with a white pencil, or chalk.
batiks are abundant in lots of shops and prices vary as much as shops do. batiks plus...batiks by design, ... bayside quilting, fabric.com, the cotton patch (in East Tawas, mi) are a few on line shops that have a pretty good variety of batiks. have fun!

Thank you so much for the quick response. I found it online, finally. I found the store I was in. quilt country in Lewisville, Tx.
I did think of finding leaves and trace them. These are actually enlarged quite alot. The batiks really make this beautiful.
thanks again.

You can always take the tracing to a copy shop to have them enlarged :D:D:D

This sounds like it will be a beautiful quilt. Post some pics when you do it.
