When Shelly Q went to the show she took a picture of a quilt that had Gollies ( Golly refers to a persons skin color) Her thread is under pictures titled (Pics of Levin Town & Country Quilt Show) Golly Medallion is the quilt I am referring to.
I want to locate a shop in the US that carries such quilt patterns. I looked for several hours yesterday no luck. Please Help!!!!! Thanks!!!!! http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/9502.page |
Here you go...
scroll down for this one... http://gollyj.alphalink.com.au/ I kept searching, but could find none in the US. All the searches came up with was Australia. |
Saw that site yesterday but I believe she only carries dolls. Sent her an email waiting for response!!!
|
I sent you a PM with the small quilts on it.
Like I said, you have to scroll down towards the bottom to find them. |
I liked that one too. I think it was my fav.... I don't know how to help you, but I sure hope you find what your looking for
|
I suspect (and hope) you will not find many US suppliers of anything related to "Gollies". See this for the history. http://www.ferris.edu/JIMCROW/golliwog/

My grandson's other grandparents gave him a Golliwog doll (from UK). My dil says it is NOT a complimentary term over there and has put the doll away.
|
bj, it is not a complimentary term anywhere. It is a racial slur and has been for many generations. You should be proud of your DIL.
|
I was surprised to see this post, it is really frowned on in England now and schools are banned from reading stories and shops are banned from selling anything with this theme on it.
For many years the company Robertson & Co made Marmalade and their trademark was a Gollywog, not any longer, it is really frowned upon. I subscribe to the Australian Quilting Magazine and when I opened and found a quilt with that theme I was, to be quite honest, quite shocked as I know it can really offend. Elle |

LadiesI do not want anyone offended, I just thought the quilt was cute. I collect ethnic dolls like Lucindsa who is in my sewing room. I just wanted to make a quilt to add to my collection. i AM NOT WANTING TO MAKE FUN OF ANYONE!!!
|
Austrailian Patchwork and Quilting lost a great many of their African American subscribers after they ran an article on making golly quilts in 2001. There was quite an uproar among quilters of all races. Use of the term is also what sparked Naomi Campbell's latest tirade at Heathrow I believe.

I don't think Bebe means to upset anyone. Some of these things are just a thing that has happened in the past. Some people are offended by it, some are not. I still have my Little Black Sambo book that I got when I was little. My girls have read it and see nothing wrong with it. It is now on the list of banned books.
I just don't get it sometimes. Maybe I'm naive to some things, I would hope that I'm not. But, my opinion...if someone wants to make something from an era past and keep it in their own home, then I see nothing wrong with it. I don't mean to start a debate with my statement either. Everyone has their own opinions and we agree to disagree on lots of subjects. I don't think anyone should be chastized, even a little bit for wanting to make something they are interested in. Ok, off my soapbox and done with this thread. |
I also collect antique dolls and there are several members of my doll clubs who "love" golliwog dolls. One of our members even attended a convention back East of others who shared the same interest. Among doll collectors I know, the term golliwog is merely descriptive of a very appealing character doll that is frankly quite sought after. (Norah Wellings dolls made some wonderful ones---company is from the UK and also made sailor dolls that were souvenir dolls on cruise ships---usually fabric)

All I can say is the quilts a adorable. The one place Terri posted had some really neat quilts and dolls. The thing is people forget, but when I was little there weren't little black girl dolls for black girls one white dolls, just everything was white, so they came up with there own style of stuff and really if you think about it people are embrassing there culture now, not making fun of it, but i guess with embrassing others think people are making fun. I don't know it was just a thought.

Okay, I've apologized to bebe for "attacking" her, which was totally not my intent. But now I feel like I also owe her a public apology. I should have directed my concern to her privately in a pm rather than in her post. So, bebe, here's my apology. I did not mean to attack your liking for the dolls, just didn't know if you knew, that at least in some circles, they had a negative connotation. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings or get anything negative started. This is not the place for that. I feel like we are all friends here and I hope to remain your friend on the board.
|
I think we all need to chill.....I didn't think anyone was attacking anyone just giving us the information about the dolls....It's too bad people are so sensitive anymore....I thought the quilt and dolls was cute...and that was it..nothing more and nothing less...just as cute as some of the other dolls that no one gets rallied up over.... Gee ladies....... we all mean well I think... :(
|
Apology accepted!!!!! Like we say on the board we learn something everyday and several of us learned today. I still like the Gollies and plan to eventually venture out to make my quilt.
Everyone Have a Good Day!!!!! |
Well we all do learn something new every day. I had never heard of them, but when i looked at the quilt in the link, it was absolutely gorgeous and stunning, and had no idea why anyone was against it, until i read that there is a bad history with them. Perhaps it's just the name golly, but i absolutely love ethnic quilts, and this one is very beautiful, with no bad connatations in the characters themselves, i thought they were all very beautiful. So i guess i can see for those of us that didnt know, i learneed something today too. I think it would be ok to make a quilt with dif ethnics in it though, as a beautiful thing...but now im glad i learned something too.
|
Sorry I haven't caught up with this till now, we've been without power here for 18 hrs due to the storms. I apologise if the pic of this quilt that I posted caused any offence to anyone, that was never my intention, I just thought they were cute dolls on a fun quilt. So I am sorry if anybodies feelings were hurt or that any trouble may have been caused in our friendly quilting comunity.
|
I hope everyone reads the link that Nor'easter posted. I think it may help us see why members of our Quilting Board family may be offended by this, but please keep in mind that some people have no idea about the background of these dolls. As Bebe stated, she only saw a quilt that she liked.
|
I too have learned something new today! I had never even heard the terms, "Gollie", "Gollywog", etc.
|
I too had never heard the terms and it is good to learn something new. The quilt in question is one of the most beautiful quilts I have seen. The detail and work that went into it is great. Like Bebe, it was my favorite.

Hi i'm going to say this as nice as i can, your girls haven't been callled little blk. samboo, crows, uncle tom, and more, i'm a black woman born in the south Mississippi at that, we have skin complexion such as dark, olive tone, fair color ( medium brown) since gollie refers to skin color i went to the web site that was on the board and all i saw was very black faces with real red lipstick around their mouth, white paint around their eyes this is the image that black people has been given for years. one time i wanted a site for african fabric before i ask help for anything i make a statement saying i don't want to offend anyone meaning donot send me the site if it would hurt someome, I really don't think bebe meant to hurt or offend anyone i really think she is some what unlearn concerning the race problem we have in america. people all over use this board and some times we have to be careful what we say.T0 the person who has the daughter with the samboo book don't send out unkind and smart remarks if you do'n't want a reply I suggest to you stop living in the past and start living in the present, children are not born prejudice they are taught prejudice.Life is to enjoyable and to short for me to dwell on unpleasant thing. smile and have a good day.lol Annette

I'm the one with the Little Black Sambo book. Like I said, I see nothing wrong with the book. I like it, my children like it and when/if I have grandchildren, I will read the book to them. I also have ALL of the Song of the South movies/videos, along with Uncle Remus books. I love them and so do my girls. Again, I see nothing wrong with it. They are stories, nothing more. People have to try and be unkind about alot of things. If anyone doesn't like what I say or do, in the privacy of MY home, then too bad! It's MY home and I will do as I please!
I don't think I sent out any "smart or unkind" remarks about anything. I just stated that I had the book. Things we ALL have from out childhood that is now banned is a part of history. I take offense in people telling me I DO NOT know what prejudice is. I DO! My child is bi-racial. Try being a white woman moving to the south and being told that your child is a "half-breed". Not a nice thing to hear. When I would hear things like that about my child, it would tear me up inside. I finally got smart and decided to NOT listen to those people. I don't teach my children prejudice and am angered by those that DO teach their children prejudice. My point is....why not just ban everything from everyone? There is always something in the world that is going to anger one group of people or another. Ok, nuff said.......I'm getting mad and I don't want to upset anyone. Not my intention. I just take offense to being told I was being UNKIND and sending out SMART remarks. |
Ok...I feel compelled to add my two cents worth here....
A lot of this comes down to history. History is history, and some of it is ugly without a doubt. But if we shelter people from it...aren't they doomed to repeat it? I've always agreed with the saying, you have to know where you came from to know where you're going. I'll share this information with my children, as I do all sides of history I possibly can. That way they are prepared for life, and they know what is acceptable to utter as well as what is not. I've never heard this phrase before I read this post. Now I can teach them what it is, its an ugly term, and not acceptable to use it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and furthering not only mine, but my children's life education. We need to be careful to not assume the worst in people...some things are just a lesson in history, that we need to know about! As far as literature, I think it is more offensive to ban any of it, than it is to read and openly discuss it. We can't learn if we can't know. |
Very well said, Lisa. I also think that the ugly parts of history must be remembered so they are not repeated. Prejudiced people come in all sizes and colors, but wonderful and caring people also come in all sizes and colors. I don't think any of our members would deliberately hurt anyone. I have met sooooo many wonderful people on this board and I hope to meet many more. :-) :-) :-)
|
:D :D :D I love our board....Because of what it stands for....Friendly people from all over the globe...pets too...everyone is welcome...
I was shocked when I realize we have some problem in here....But do we really???? Its obvious that no one really wanted to hurt anyone and no one continue to feel "ofended"..... I relate to this...with the history of when my kids were small: The younger, looks more like Polish boy, and the other more like a mexican boy....People used to refer to the younger one, calling him "Guerito" which mean something like "light color".....He used to get very upset crying that he doesn't want to be called like this.....While his brother was very sad, he wanted people to call him "Guerito" too...... The most funny thing is that the younger was born actually in Mexico and is very mexican in most of the way..... Who cares.....We love both of them very much..... Have a wonderful day and......Please, Don't take things personaly.... |
Hello - I am wondering if you would like to have a look at this link for Golly patterns. I saw it at a fair it is a BOM and is so wonderful (but a little expensive) - nice to look at though (Australia) - www.gollyville.com :)
|
BeBe I UNDERSTAND about typing something and it being taken the wrong way.
The quilts are beautiful I am SURE you were NOT trying to cause hate and dicontent. This shows we are able to discuss a "touchy" topic as adults and be able to learn from one another. I am really glad I found this site. I have been to too many others where this would have ended in people leaving the group with hurt feelings after alot of name calling and bitter words exchanged. |
