[color=green]I've been seriously thinking about selling quilt patterns of the quilt designs I have made. But I really don't know how to go about it. I think my main problems are writing of pattern instructions, making sure the design works and everything is accurate, and the copyrighting (oh, and printing). I'd really like to have some help writing patterns and how to copyright and later have people test the patterns (and if everything goes smoothly, have the test quilts be photographed for the patterns). If anyone is interested let me know. :)[/green]

I do know that copyright is in place as soon as you write the original pattern instructions in your own words. You don't have to register it, you automatically own the rights to your own work. You do need to mark it as copyrighted.
Good luck! I can't wait to see what you do with this! :)

If you are interested, I have a friend, who publishes her patterns and she could answer a lot of your questions. PM me for her email/number. I'm a pattern tester for her patterns and would be happy to do the same for you.

Get yourself a copy of this book, either thru interlibrary loan or buy it (I strongly suggest the latter if you are serious about this venture).
It's called Publish Your Patterns, How to Write, Print, and Market your Designs, 2nd Edition, by Nancy Restuccia (McKenna Linn), 144 pages, ISBN-10: 0971450102, ISBN-13: 978-0971450103. It's 19.95 at Amazon.com, but you can get it for 17.95 at Quilting Books Unlimited (she gives a 10% discount on all books). http://www.qbu.com/shop/prodetails.asp?prodid=1740
The info on what it covers can be found on the publisher's websire here...http://quiltwoman.com/nr-09.aspx
Good luck ...and stick with it!!

One way to keep your costs down would be to only sell them in a pdf format download :D... a lot less hassle than having to ship out orders too. Then when you get some cash coming in, you could print some out for selling in LQS.

If you need help with mock ups in EQ let me know :D:D:D

I was going to ask Sherry (if this endeavor works out) if she would sell my patterns in her quilt shop here in town. Hence the printing.

Mock ups in EQ would be awesome. By the way, can you do patterns for table runners on EQ? I was thinking about doing a table runner for the Shuriken design.

Yes I can :D:D:D

Flying_V_Goddess 12-27-2009 09:55 PM

Cool. I'll have to gather up all the designs and variations I have. Do you want me to PM you the designs and specs?

amma 12-27-2009 10:02 PM

Yes please :D

Flying_V_Goddess 12-27-2009 10:04 PM

I'll send them when I can get around to gathering them up and drawing out anything that's still in my head. Not sure when I'll get to it (been busy moving into the new place). But I'll PM you everything when I finish.

Good Luck! I love to see women start up a new business! Bravo!
i did a couple test patterns for a friend, small christmas wallhangings with fusable applique..she was going to teach a class, and wanted to make sure they were right, and the language/instructions were clear..it was fun.
I wish you the best!

ckcowl 12-28-2009 04:28 AM

i do alot of store displays and pattern testing so, when the time is right if you need more testers give me a hollar, always looking forward to trying out new patterns : )!
best of luck
maybe you could start with a couple tutorials here on the forum to practice clear instructions...

Good luck. I belong to a group of pattern designers and pattern testers on yahoo groups. They are very helpful.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/quiltdesigners/
and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuiltPatternTesters/

Both were going well until my computer died and the company repairing it took 4 months to fix it. But then my enthusiasm had waned to the point I couldn't get started again. The computer is on the fritz again two months later.

I tried and was just about there, but the Microsoft update for word destroyed my ability to see the pictures I inserted in the documents.

The point is don't get discouraged and back up everything so you don't lose it.

Good luck.

I'm going to join the quilt design group and see where that takes me. I could use any help I can get. Thanks!

That Yahoo! group has been offering me some good feedback. I know I got some ways to go, but I think I'm getting a better grasp on things

Oklahoma Suzie 12-29-2009 08:01 PM

When I get there, I'll do another post requesting testers. I think it won't be for a while though, but I do appreciate you expressing an interest to test my patterns.

LucyInTheSky 12-30-2009 09:12 PM

Count me in for pattern tester! Unless it's applique... *shudder*

beckyw 01-30-2010 03:04 PM
