Looking for info on making a Shattered 9 Patch

Hi all - I'm looking for some additional info on making a Shattered 9 patch - specifically the (black) trim around each individual piece. I have searched here and googled for a tutorial. I found lots of blogs and images but nothing 'helping' me ... I did find one class advertisement which indicated it was easier than it seems.

I hope it's ok i'm posting a link to a blog that has a couple on this page -
http://dzintrastitcheries.blogspot.c...and-lunch.html
(if not can just the link be deleted?)

Any / all ideas, thoughts, comments and inputs are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it is easy. I just went looking in my sewing room for a pattern i have somewhere, called shattered ... something. can't remember what. but i think it's star points sort of like a New York Beauty block. anyway, if I find that i will let you know. you can have it, i will never get around to making it. i will let you know if i find it.
look for more info on this one you are interested in. i'm sure there are tutes on doing it or free block maybe on quiterscache. good luck. CC

i found crazy nine patch blocks that would work too. you would have to add the black strips though.

WTxRed 10-22-2012 08:56 AM

Thanks! that looks to be the same layout - but i 'know' there is going to be some smashingly simple way to add the black trim to each...

nativetexan 10-22-2012 10:46 AM

found this showing how to make crazy nine patch blocks. you could make them and then add black strips over the seams.

have fun.

I think you do it like any black strip method, but you need to cut the slashes in the same spots, and use a different fabric for each addition. So start with 12 different blocks, slash them all in the same spot, add the black, then add a different fabric to the other side of the black. Slash them all again in the same spot, then add the black, and again add a different fabric to the other side. Slash again... Wash, rinse, repeat. Does that make any sense? At least that is my best guess from looking at it. I bet it would be fun. I might try it for my toddler for Christmas anyhow.

misskira has the right idea, it is very similar to a Magic Tiles pattern by Kathleen Bissett. maybe this link will help you understand it. http://www.ehow.com/how_7478005_sew-...ile-quilt.html

Makes total sense ... and probable more so than if I'd tried to explain it!

It's a Slash-The-Stash technique.

The easiest way to get them to be all slashed in the same place .... stack them up into one pile. Or if too many fabrics, then two piles, etc.

At the end you will need to square them all up, as they may have gotten slightly off-sized or off-square with all the slashing, piecing and stitching.

You've got me intrigued with this pattern ... and I've been thinking about making it for a Christmas gift.

Curious ... how would you quilt this?

(...... other than a meander or stipple)

This would be a super easy project & a good way to use some smaller pieces of fabric that is left over from other quilts..

I think I'm going to make it a cuddle size quilt with blue and green batiks and for the quilting - a star/sunburst explosion (think straight lines coming out from a small circle, in a sun ray type design, offset to one upper quadrant - like the sun rays shining through from behind... That's what my mind's eye saw the first time I saw one of these.

Thanks everyone for all the help! y'all, as always, are AwEsOmE !!!

shattered nine patck

On www.craftsy.com you can sign up for free online classes called block of the month and the January class is the one where she shows you how to make a Wonky Pound Sign Block Pattern and I think it is what you are looking for. I hope this helps you.

I looked at the site you provided. The quilt looks like a 9-piece Shuffle with strips. I saw this on Sewing with Nancy. You stack nine squares of fabric. and slash them into 9 pieces. The you shuffle the pieces by taking the top piece in the first stack and putting it on the bottom, then the top 2 of the second stack and put them on the bottom. the the top three of the nest stack and put them on the bottom. You continue this until the last stack and you leave it as is. Now you should have nine different layers. You sew each layer back together to get nine different blocks. It looks like someone as added narrow strips between the pieces to get the shattered look. I have attached a pic of a nine piece shuffle. Good luck.

QuiltE is right on. I do have a pattern from an old magazine , and if you'll pm me with your e-mail, I'll be happy to send it to you. I've done several, and depending on your choice of fabrics, it can look like stained glass. Super easy and FAST since you're making six big blocks at one time. Lots of fun.

GrannyH 10-24-2012 08:49 AM

What would happen if you chose a backing fabric, cut it into the size squares you want, and then appliqued the broken tiles to it instead, like doing a quilt as you go?

I found this one on Etsy. Stained Glass. http://www.etsy.com/listing/10972479...-glass-48-x-60

Oh Gosh, me too. This lets me know exactly how to make it, and I'm so appreciative.

I did one kind of like it (without sashing). Mine used only 7 fabrics. I cut 7 squares of equal size and stacked them. Then I cut them into 7 pieces (at random). Now I took the first stack and left it in place. The second stack, I took the top fabric and put it on the bottom. The third stack, I took the first 2 fabrics and put them on the bottom. And so on. This assures that for each block, there is a different layout.

Then I sewed the pieces back together and squared each block. By not using sashing, I lost quite a bit in size.

The same concept should apply to the 9-patch. Just use 9 fabrics and make sure that you have a large enough starting square.

Go to JoAnn's, buy some bi-fold bias tape (black), topstitch it down. You have your black.

Thanks everyone for all of the great ideas and suggestions and visuals! I have my plan down, just have to finish a couple of other tops first...I WILL post pics of it soon tho!
