Looking for large block quilt pattern
I just received my Timeless Treasures (Shimmer) from Favorite Fabrics and am thrilled. Now, I need a pattern that will do it justice. I don't like the Timeless Treasures website for a Shimmer pattern. It is too busy. I really want to be able to show-case the fabric. I know I have seen quilts on here, "patterns for fabric to beautiful to cut."
That is what I am looking for. Please help with any suggestions or pictures of quilts that you have made with the fabric in mind. Thank you. |
Once upon a time I bought a lot of material in an oriental pattern that I just could not bear to cut up. I kept looking at it and petting it and finally one day the light bulb came on and I decided to make it into a whole-cloth quilt. Turned out really pretty and my oldest daughter was gifted with it. I'll see if I can find pictures of it.
I looked at a picture of your fabric and I, too, would have a hard time cutting it up....it is beautiful. Another pattern you could use is the Just Can't Cut It pattern. Can't remember who puts it out, but it uses a big focal square and 3 or 4 complimentary fabrics for each block. Pretty and easy. |

Here are a couple of pictures of Michele's Oriental quilt.

How about that 10 minute block, it has a big block and is fast.

The oriental quilt is beautiful. I too have a lot of this type of fabric and want to use it in probably the 10 minute block.

Here is a style I did in EQ that might work for you

But my problem is that with some fabrics, as in the Oriental fabric, even if you cut it in large 10 or 12 inch blocks, you're still killing the fabric! Thus a whole-cloth. Sometimes it's strange the way my mind works!

The BQ pattern from Maple Island Quilts uses big blocks to show off fabrics.

Here's my go-to pattern for large scale prints:
Scroll down until you see the star quilt http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...ns-t76192.html The four corners are squares and the rest are half square triangles. I usually make them 12 inches finished, so the main star is 48 inches. add borders to make it whatever size you like. |
Tuesday Morning in my area (SoCal) still has the Big Block Quilts book and a book that deals with fabric you can't cut (can't remember the name). You might try the store in your area and see if they still have them.

Several years ago the ladies over at QOV were all a' buzz over a book called Just Can't Cut It (by Pamela Mostek) to use with fabric that had large patterns. I got it (I had some pin-up girl fabric that I didn't want to hack up) & it's fabulous!

I really like the idea of a whole cloth quilt - cutting up the fabric to me destroys the beauty of the fabric. Good luck with your choice and don't forget to post a picture of the finished quilt.

I have a book - Supersize 'Em! 22 quilts from oversized blocks by Debby Kratovil. It contains fabulous patterns that are beautifully illustrated and easy to understand. It was published by Martingale & Company in 2009 so still should be available somewhere. Happy quilting.

You could purchase this pattern. Looks like a great way to use a large piece of fabric. |

I had some fabric I couldn't cut, and one of our guild members showed me a quilt she called a "cheater quilt." I sort of copied it, and I am very happy with the results. Perhaps just bordering it, like I did, would work for you?
