Looking for a patter to use the "At the Museum" panel by Exclusively Quilters
Have any of you seen this?
http://www.creativequiltkits.com/qui...-quilters.html It's a panel of paintings by impressionist (?) artists. The painting and the artist's name below. The paintings are irregular and I'm looking for a pattern that could make use of them. I'd like to fussy cut the painting and the artist's name or at minimum the painting. It's beautiful. The only error in the panel is that every artist is listed with the last name except for Vincent Van Gogh, who is shown as "Vincent". Huh? Anyway, if you can suggest a pattern, I'd really appreciate it. This could be one quilt that my mother would actually like. Thanks, Cathy |
I looked at the panel and it would be fun to work with. Lucky for you they are spaced enough between that you can cut apart, and sew together without losing any of the paintings!
It might be as simple as following the same idea as they have ... frame each up with a black border, and join them in a similar layout as what they have used. Another idea ... 1/2" black border then 1/4" flange to pop the colours of the painting, then a larger black border. Each flange could be a different colour. Then randomly place the paintings, as though they are art on the wall. I'm dealing with a similar challenge right now for a totally different quilt .... my plan is to measure the blocks (your paintings) and then start drafting possibilities out on graph paper. |

Thanks for the suggestion QuiltE. One of the ladies at the quilt store suggested something similar but not with the colored flange. I really like that idea.
Groucho, that's an interesting way of looking at it. I hadn't thought of it at all but if somebody says VINCENT and ARTIST, who do we think of?? Thanks so much for the replies. |

It's the one with eight prints? It's beautiful! I would arrange them 3 x 3 (with black borders), with a pieced block, in the center (picking up the various colors). Stars always appeal to me but just about any multi-colored block would be nice.

I was thinking you might find a multi-coloured batik that would work for the flange strips.
I just went back for another look ... and noticed that there are Impressionist Blenders to go with it. I'd sure be looking at using them! Then I was curious if there was something via Google. Better still ... I found you a virtual design wall. Unfortunately, I don't think you can cut up the fabric, but you can play around a little ............ http://store.cabbagerosequilting.com...t_ids=0,1,1482 |
Look at the patterns at http://www.grizzlygulchgallery.com/ she has several that have some large blocks like "Walk About". That might give you some good ideas

If I had this panel I would "frame" them in a wood grain (like Joel Dewberry's wood grains), and piece in a printed or stamped title plate, or an info card like you would see at the museum. Then a light neutral like a white or light grey to suggest a wall behind the painting. You could even get fabric with different gold stampings in intricate designs to suggest fancy carved frames.
ETA: Forgot to mention that Tula Pink's book has a quilt that looks like paintings hanging on a wall- different sized blocks framed and scattered irregularly on a background. |
The pattern that someone posted in oriental fabrics would look good for these as well. I believe the name of the pattern was Memories of Japan? The Shadowbox pattern is similar and would look good in that fabric too. I wonder if someone will try to claim copywrite infringement on that fabric?
