I saw this picture somewhere and am now wanting to make a quilt like this, but don't have enough detail of the fishes. Has anyone seen this?

Haven't made it, but the fish look like some simple applique to me. Body (including mouth detail) is cut from one fabric. Top fin, back fin, bottom fin, and teeny-tiny fin are cut from a second fabric. Layer the body over the edge of the top, back, and bottom fins. Then layer the teeny-tiny fin over the body. Does this help? You might be able to roughly freehand draw it out knowing that this is how it appears.

Yeah, once I attached the photo I could see it better. It guess it would work as a wall hanging (I think all those appliques add bulk, right?).

I'm guessing that the photo was of a wall hanging, otherwise the fish would be really big.
Since you don't have a pattern, you can just make them whatever size you want.

It looks like the background strips are probably 2" wide finished size.

the background strips look to be wiggly so your seam looks like it might not have to be perfect I love it hehe.

It's definitely applique and the pieces appear to be top stitched with a small zigzag. Looks as if it'd be fairly easy to come up with something very similar, given the right fabrics. :)

Here's the pattern. It's from Castilleja Cotton.

You're a dear! I think I have garnered enough confidence to try it on my own first, but I surely do thank you for your help.

Thanks for sharing the animal coloring pages. I've been wanting to make a fish quilt--even found the perfect batik for the background. These fish are just what I'm looking before. We'll have an underwater scene before you know it! Great ideas, as usual.

the fish are Tangs which are reef fish here in Hawaii. You might want to check out hawaiian fabrics. a good site is fmart.com They have great fabrics at a good price. They are in Honolulu and carry fabrics i've not seen on the Mainland.

Wow, if I needed to spend more money (than I already do on fabrics) I sure could get into a salt water aquarium with these gorgeous fish! Thanks so much for sending the name and fabric source.
